2012 GrandSlam Chengdu

The Final Post | Bleep! 19/07/2012

Bleep ... The "Live from Chengdu" blog was a resounding success but ... It also demonstrated that the type of interactivity WDSF Communications had in mind is not (yet) achievable.

When the format of a blog was first considered to bring coverage of WDSF competitions to a global audience through the Internet, interactivity was quite possibly the one feature that intrigued us at WDSF Communications the most.

Not only would we provide you, the audience, with a steady flow of information (videos, photos, results, whatever), you would be able to give us your feedback, voice your opinion, express your thoughts ... Through your comments! The "Live from ..." blogs were intended to develop into  lively platforms where exchange between members of the audience - and between you and us - would be an important part of it all.

In this blog we were forced to publish a warning because ...

... a few of you believing that an opinion is best expressed by using foul language and expletives, and that declaring one’s preference for a determined couple is a matter of insulting another. WDSF will not tolerate that, and the easiest way for us to stop it is certainly not by editing your comments …  But by deactivating the comment function altogether!

Then we did have to deactivate comments because someone felt compelled to continue insulting the athletes and this organisation.

We are now discussing internally how to proceed from here. If someone can contribute with a suggestion, practical solution, etc., please send them to

Following up on our previous post "Our View On Your Opinion", we advise you that we have desactivated comments. We realise that a majority of you gets deprived of the opportunity to express yourself on this blog because of very few not playing by the rules. But we simply cannot tolerate insults to our athletes and adjudicators getting published here.

Whether or not we will go back to moderated comments for registered users we will decide at a later stage.

Our View On Your Opinion 17/07/2012

Watch your language! Whether or not to allow anonymous comments to the posts on our blogs was discussed at great length. In the end we decided to allow them until such time that moderating what YOU publish here would turn into an assignment for US.

This has clearly happened now with a few of you believing that an opinion is best expressed by using foul language and expletives, and that declaring one’s preference for a determined couple is a matter of insulting another. WDSF will not tolerate that, and the easiest way for us to stop it is certainly not by editing your comments …  But by deactivating the comment function altogether!

We had hoped that followers of our blogs would adhere to something that is sometimes referred to as "netiquette" - but that is ultimately nothing other than good manners, politeness and, above all, respect for others. Most of you do and make valid contributions. Only a few don't and look at this as their soap box from which to spout profanities, vulgarisms (it does have its place here) and insults.

For those, let this be the yellow card!

It was brought to our attention that WDSF President Carlos Freitag celebrated his birthday yesterday. The GrandSlam organisers, officials and athletes threw him an impromptu party immediately following the award presentation.

Happy birthday, Mr President!
