Pool Party Progress Report 09/09/2011

Carlos Freitag, Shawn and Gladys Tay The poolside welcome party started at 7 p.m. Singapore time, now it's eleven. An excellent dinner was enjoyed by everybody, the speeches were short, the cocktails were Latin, and before I knew I was all by myself. The party is over! So much for progress ...

Seriously, most of the athletes have retired to their rooms hours ago, right after the speeches ... By the way, these were held by WDSF President Carlos Freitag and the host and hostess of the 2011 World Latin in Singapore, Shawn and Gladys Tay.

A Struggle For Success ...ion! Second Part 09/09/2011

Not to be missed! Part two of the “Struggle for Success …ion” continues in the chronological order of those competitions that pitched the top contenders dancing tomorrow for the vacant Latin throne against each other.

After the 2011 European Latin in Marseille, FRA, it appeared that a new order had been established, that the succession of Alexey Silde and Anna Firstova had been settled.

The new European Champions did win on a few occasions against some of the other Marseille finalists: at the International Open in Tallinn, EST, and the Seoul, KOR, International Open for instance. But in the Chengdu, CHN, Grand Slam they came in second to Aniello Langella and Khrystyna Moshenska, ITA, and the last showdown in Stuttgart, GER, they did not enter. The Stuttgart Grand Slam was won by

  • Andrey Zaytsev and Anna Kuzminskaya, RUS, ahead of
  • Aniello Langella and Khrystina Moshenska, ITA, and third-placed
  • Martino Zanibellato and Michelle Abildstrup, DEN.

That should make tomorrow’s clash between all of these couples even more unpredictable. What we can do here is show you the solo Jive in Stuttgart for the three listed above and the solo Jive by Zoran and Tatsiana in Marseille. Just to tie you over until tomorrow …

2011 WDSF World Latin Registration 09/09/2011

Conrad Pool The poolside welcome party is just minutes away. Everone's heading there now. WDSF Communications too, hence we cannot continue on this blog for the next few hours and, depending on the official World Latin cocktails that will be served, we won't be back until tomorrow morning. Just kidding ...

Everybody at the welcome party? No, the ladies at the registration desk are still working ... Friendliness pairs with efficiency: Singapore style!

90 couples will compete in tomorrow's World Latin in Singapore. Most arrive today and leave on Sunday. Many will have travelled thousands of kilometres ... Martino Zanibellato and Michelle Abildtrup, DEN, should have accrued more frequent flyer miles too. After a long and tiring journey is before another long and ...  But tomorrow everyone is wide awake.

Men At Work 09/09/2011

Marco Sietas, WDSF Sports Director Sports Director Marco Sietas, who will be the chairman tomorrow, hand-delivers the new WDSF flag to Asia. The recent change of the federation's name called for new flags to be produced in Spain. All National Member Bodies should eventually get theirs ... Just as as soon as Marco comes to your country, he will bring a full set along with him. Saves shipping!

Even WDSF President Carlos Freitag (below) is in the flag delivery business these days. He distrubuted some 40 sets during the recent German Open in Stuttgart.

Shawn Tay (below), WDSF Secertary General and World Latin chief organiser, is the man who lets the work to be done by others ... In this case by the friendly volunteers staffing the registration desk.

Sleepless In Singapore 08/09/2011

Travelled for some 16 hours, arrived at the hotel, took a shower ... And then started to record a time-laps sequence of the day to night views from my room at the Conrad (9th floor) ... Went for dinner, met people I know, went back to the room, stopped the recording, went to bed, couldn't sleep ... Here's the time-laps recording ... Maybe part of it is lost in translation! Going to bed again! Good night!

A Struggle For Success ...ion! First Part 08/09/2011

Not to be missed! With the end of every dynasty starts the struggle over succession! When Alexey Silde and Anna Firstova, RUS, vacated their throne in January 2011 by turning pro after the Pforzheim International Open, the couples with aspirations to succeed the two-time world champions had lined up – for some time already. Not all of them opted to dance the Copenhagen Grand Slam, but Europe’s best did gather in Marseille, FRA, to fight it out for the vacant continental title …

WDSF, still IDSF then, Communications was present too and produced live coverage plus The Final Reel below …

Gracious Hosts For Twenty Years 07/09/2011

1992 World Standard Saturday's World Championship is a premiere for the hosts in Singapore. Even more: it is for the first time ever that the world title in Latin is contested in Asia. As such it should bring back memories of another event that made history nearly 20 years ago.

In the annals of the Singapore DanceSport Federation we came across a report on the 1992 IDSF World DanceSport Championship Standard.

"Saturday, 4 April 1992, was a very special day for all members of the Amateur DanceSport Association (ADSA). Not only did Singapore become the first country in Asia to host the World DanceSport Championship Standard, we broke three records doing it.

For the first time in the history of any World Championship, a record number of 65 couples took part. It was also the first time that 39 countries were represented, breaking another record. Some 4,000 spectators witnessed the crowning of the World Champions that night, making it the largest number of spectators in any DanceSport event in South-East Asia ...

So, Singapore had her “premiere", and the IDSF was thrilled. ADSA's dream had come true. At the farewell dinner hosted by the IDSF at the world famous Raffles Hotel, IDSF President Detlef Hegemann assured that more World and International Championships would be organised in Asia in future. What wonderful news!"

The pledge made by Detlef Hegemann, the WDSF Honorary President who passed away on 23 August 2011, did indeed bring many more top-level DanceSport events to the city-state. Grand Slams, Grand Slam Finals, World and Continental Championships!

Read up on some of the major championships that were organised by the Singapore DanceSport Federation (previously ADSA) here.
