Shifting Paradigms

It is nothing short of shifting paradigms. It is the most ambitious project ever embarked upon by the World DanceSport Federation. And it is certainly an undertaking that requires much time and effort before a fully restructured governing body will finally emerge. Even more more alliances will need to be forged; democratic and federalist structures will need to be developed; and, above all, some of the current perspectives will need to be changed as well.

Wheelchair DanceSport  Rock 'n' Roll

The restructure of the World DanceSport Federation is in full progress. The target is defined: establishing DanceSport as an encompassing brand uniting all forms and styles of dance practised as sport under a single umbrella. The first milestones have been attained.

June 2007

IDSF assists professional athletes in establishing an independent organisation with the aim to co-ordinate dates and other matters pertaining to DanceSport competitions, and to work co-operatively in developing, implementing and enforcing competition, disciplinary and other rules.

October 2008

IDSF enters into a co-operation agreement with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), pledging to develop and promote Wheelchair DanceSport jointly with the IPC, and to work towards establishing a single international governing body for DanceSport, including Wheelchair.

December 2008

The United Country Western Dance Council (UCWDC) becomes an IDSF Associate Member.

October 2009

The IDSF VISION 2012 Working Group meets to discuss the proceedings for IDSF to evolve into the World DanceSport Federation. Representatives of all organisations draft a joint statement under the title “Unity Through DanceSport,” affirming their full support of the VISION 2012 concept.

March 2010

The second meeting of the IDSF VISION 2012 Working Group focuses on the steps to be taken over the next years. The first draft of an amended Associate Membership Agreement is presented and discussed.

June 2010

The IDSF General Meeting establishes the Professional Division.

December 2010

The World Baton Twirling Federation (WBTF) applies for Associate Membership.

June 2011

The IDSF General Meeting approves a change of the federation’s name to World DanceSport Federation (WDSF). World Rock ‘n’ Roll Confederation, UDWDC and WBTF become Associate Members under the terms of the amended Associate Membership Agreement.

September 2012

WDSF awards the inaugural edition of the WDSF World DanceSport Games to Kaohsiung, TPE. They are scheduled to take place from 15 to 21 September 2013.
