Debriefing the Debrief

2017 World Latin - Vienna, AUT

The first "Adjudicators' Debrief" that was held following the 2017 World Latin was an unqualified success. Even though, going into this pilot edition, there were quite a few misconceptions of the procedure held by members of the community, by adjudicators as well as dancers. All the more important that efforts are made to correct them and to inform about the process extensively over the next days and weeks. Until the second debrief!

Even the leading dictionaries manage to make the word "debrief" imply more drama than strictly necessary: to question (someone, typically a soldier or spy) about a completed mission or undertaking: "the government debriefed him over a span of four years  ... during his debriefing he exposed two Russian spies" ... the hostages were later debriefed by police."

Merriam Webster's second definition was certainly the most compatible with what the Competition Manipulation Task Force had envisioned for its debriefs: "to carefully review upon completion: "to debrief the flight."

The debriefer, Adjudicators' Commission chair Cor van der Stroet, explains by summing up the experience.
