Time To Review

The 2017 World Championships ShowDance will produce worthy winners and the participating couples are all to be commended for the effort they have put into telling their stories through dance. Nevertheless, maybe this year's editions - the one in Latin as well as the one in Standard - should be seen as an opportunity to review the format of the championships in order to improve it further.

The participation in 2017 is down from 25% to 50% over that in 2016 and in 2015. 19 couples between both sections are not doing full justice to the scale of event which WDSF and the Chengdu organisers had envisioned. That Showdance will always be a specialist's game can hardly be ignored, but the right incentives could induce more dancers to turn into specialists too.

That some of the medallists in 2016 return with the same show is obviously in compliance with the rules, but is it also in the latter's spirit? Don't take this wrong! It's good to see a perfect performance, one which has matured over time. But creativty and novelty can also make an impression on the adjudicators.
