The Vice-President for Communications, Mrs Leena Liusvaara, held one of the three speeches during the opening ceremony. Here are a few excerpts:
As the world changes around us, DanceSport must evolve too. New styles and different formats have developed over time - and some of the definitions have been rewritten. Today, the WDSF has disciplines and styles alongside the traditional and revered Standard and Latin. The goal is to seek a common understanding and the commitment to develop DanceSport jointly in order to reach bigger audiences and touch more people with dance as sport.
We need to have the athletes at the core and close to our hearts. An open culture for discussion and transparency in administration are important matters in every phase of this development. This includes the transparency in adjudication, with the idea of developing the systems for the next stage. That is something needed in order to establish ourselves fully as an Olympic sport.
