Unity in Diversity

More so than any other event on the competition calendar, the World DanceSport Games (WDSG) embody the essence of an all-encompassing DanceSport. Their inaugural edition unites the many different forms and styles of dance in a multi-disciplinary competitive event that brings out the common traits between them.

From 16 to 20 September 2013, the international elites in 14 DanceSport disciplines gather in the Taiwanese port city of Kaohsiung to contest the title of WDSG 2013 Champions. The WDSG 2013 Competition Programme comprises the following disciplines and dance styles.

  • Boogie-Woogie
  • Cheerleading
  • Formation (Latin and Standard)
  • HipHop (Individual, Duo, Small Groups)
  • Latin
  • Line Dance
  • Rock 'n' Roll
  • Salsa
  • Showdance (Latin and Standard)
  • Taike Dance
  • Wheelchair DanceSport

The games foremost aim is to promote the particular values of dance as sport and to inspire the world to start moving to music. The games do this by demonstrating the immense diversity in DanceSport.

Of the above list, some styles can be considered mere variations of the classic Latin and Standard dances, others are indigenous to determined countries or cultures, and still others appear – at least at first glance – to have broken with the established patterns of dance.

But ultimately, all styles or forms of dance have evolved from mankind's fascination with moving to the most different tunes.
