The Organisers' Views 06/09/2011

Earlier today, WDSF Communications had the opportunity to speak with the chief organiser of the 2011 WDSF World Latin in Singapore. And only very briefly through Skype! It was not easy since Shawn Tay runs on a very tight schedule this week. A record participation and the Singaporean ambition to deliver nothing short of excellence have Shawn up on his toes and tied up in efforts as different as arranging airport transfers to choosing the appropriate ingredients to cocktails.

2011 Кубок Чемпионов - 2011 Champions Cup

dancesport.ru.jpg The dancesport.ru website reports about the 2011 Champions Cup in Latin that has taken place yesterday in Moscow, RUS. In its sixth edition, the invitational event gathered six champion couples for a competition held under very special rules. The most basic requirement for couples to be invited by the Russian organisers: local, national, continental, world - anything - but champions they must be! Another rule specifies that a different attire must be worn for every dance. Overall, the event's format is certainly one deserving of the label "made for TV". 90 minutes and it's over, and the judges have to be seated in order to avoid conflict with the cameras!

Just one week prior to the World Latin in Singapore, three of the nominated couples had traveled to Russia to take part in the Champions Cup.

Singapore Starting List 01/09/2011

Live from Singapore! After our earlier post on participation in the 2011 World Latin has apparently caused a stir, we now publish the starting list that the chief organiser Shawn Tay has forwarded to WDSF Communications earlier today. As all starting lists go, it is official and binding only from the moment the first round is called. No-shows, substitutitions, etc., there is still one week to go and much can change until then. We do apologise for any inconvenciences the "91 And Counting" post of 1 September may have caused.

In any case, 90 couples representing 51 nations could well be a new record participation. But only as long as there are no no-shows!

Whose Night Will It Be? 31/08/2011

The blog on last year's World Latin was wrapped with a final post on the old and new Champions, on Alexey Silde and Anna Firstova, RUS. The video of their solo Paso Doble in New York concluded with "It was their night! Again!" and cautiously hinted at a sequel in 2011. Working title: "Again and again!" But as it turned out, it was their last appearance in a regular World Championship.

With the "Who's to follow?" question arising ahead of the World Latin in Singapore, this is as good a time as any to take another look at the Paso Doble by Alexey and Anna.

ajnvVmcY7BI|2010 World Latin Champions - Silde and Firstova

Live from NYC! More of the dances that Alexey and Anna performed in New York can still be viewed on the 2010 World Latin blog. And chances are that you'll be able to watch their successors dancing in one of the other videos too.

Through the 2010 World Latin blog you can also access the posts for 2009 Maribor. Or you may want to have a look at the 2011 European Latin blog? One thing is certain: somewhere the couple whose night it will be on 10 September in Singapore is already dancing!

The Participants 31/08/2011

2011 WDSF World Latin The final countdown to the 2011 WDSF World Latin is about to start. Not only for the organisers in Singapore, for the 88 couples representing 49 nations too.

While some countries will put in their World Latin premieres in Singapore, quite a few others seem prominently absent this year.  Should just one additional WDSF member body decide on entering a single couple, the benchmarks of 89 couples and 50 nations in Maribor, SLO, in 2009 would get matched. Two additional countries and two couples and WDSF has itself a new record participation for a World Latin!
