System 2.0 | All In A Day's Work 10/05/2013

The adjudicators on the panel in Cambrils were happy after the first outing of Judging System 2.0 and commended the people who had developed hardware that is easy to operate, even for the “non-techies” among them, giving them the chance to really concentrate on the couples before they enter their score through the touch- screen interface.

Let’s look at this hardware! In a group dance, with six couples on the floor, the adjudicators have the respective column for the couples all lined up on their screen. After watching each couple’s performance for 15 – 18 seconds, it’s the jugde’s tip of the finger that marks the score. And afterwards it’s on to the next couple.

 
Judging System 2.0 Group Dance: 6 couples (identified by bib #) to be scored for “Movement to Music” – MM – on the scale from 1 to 10 (with .5 fractions in a second column on the right).

For the solo dances, it is even easier. More time is now spent watching the couple and only a single score is entered after approximately 60 seconds. The adjudicators are always aware of the time that they have available too, a countdown clock alerts them when the decision time is approaching.

The Panel of Adjudicators 10/05/2013

Adjudicators' Table You might be wondering who'll be seated at this table and in front of the terminals tomorrow and Sunday? Here is the list of WDSF Adjuctors who will be scoring the performances with the Judging System 2.0 from the quarterfinals of the GrandSlam.

Since we had to compile information on this panel for the Eurosport commentators, we pass the little background we came up with - mostly by googling their names - to you as well.

While they have some of the best places in the house assigned to them, they have, for obvious reasons, their backs turned to the public-viewing screen. 

  • Erik Hento lives in Helsinki, FIN. He started in DanceSport in 1979. A seven-time Finnish Champion, he also participated in shows like “Strictly come Dancing” and “Burn the Floor.”
  • Kim Mihyeun hails from Korea. He has been an Adjudicator since 2007.
  • Melinda Hayes lives in Hornsby Westfield, AUS. She is a board member of DanceSport South Australia.
  • Wenjuan Huang is from China. He officiated his first WDSF competition in 2010.
  • Dmitry Timokhin, RUS, was successful Latin competitor through 2002, placing very high in World and European Cups.
  • Nick Fok (Siau Kau) from Hong Kong judged his last GrandSlam in Chengdu, CHN, in July 2012.
  • Stefano Fanasca, ITA, has been a WDSF Adjudicator since 2008. Before that, he was a successful competitor in Ten Dance.
  • Florencio Garcia Lopez, GER, is a DanceSport lecturer and choreographer. He judged his last GrandSlam in Antwerp, BEL, last year.
  • Tetsuya Sakurada hails from Japan. Until the mid 1990s, he was a competitor himself.
  • Peter Chen is from Taipei, TPE. He was a competitor through 2003 and gained his first experience in adjudicating GrandSlam competitions in Seoul, KOR, back in 2011.
  • Ton Greten is from the Netherlands, a former competitor and currently trains a Latin formation team in Aachen, GER.
  • Marco Sietas is from Barcelona, ESP, and works as Sports Director of the World DanceSport Federation. He is the driving force behind the adoption of the new judging system, a.k.a. System 2.0, and of the overall GrandSlam format. For the Hong Kong GrandSlams, he acts as the Chairman of Adjudicators.

While You Were Asleep ... 10/05/2013

grandSlam Hong Kong The organisers of the 2013 GrandSlam in Hong Kong kept very busy for the last two days preparing the venue for this weekend's competitions. The arena at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre is virtually ready to be danced at and looks absolutely stunning already, with a superb GrandSlam look applied to it throughout.

The WDSF Communications team members finally met up face-to-face with their counterparts on the Organising Committee and with the producers in charge of the international television signal. After weeks of corresponding by e-mail and occasionally talking by phone, it was a pleasure to shake hands at last with

  • George Yip, Chairman of the Hong Kong DanceSport Association
  • Winifred, a delightful person who was recruited by George to work as a volunteer for the GrandSlam - and whose responsibilites span such range that no job title would be sufficiently appropriate
  • Albert Cheng, the senior sports producer at Television Broadcasts (TVB)
  • Patrick Kwan, technical director for outside broadcast at TVB

But there is also some work still to be done: applying the final touches to the venue fit-out and preparing for the two live broadcasts (Eurosport 2/Eurosport Asia on Saturday/Sunday from 12:30 UTC/GMT). The dancers and the adjudicators are expected to be showing up during the later part of the day.

Here We Are! 09/05/2013

T-Rex Rubber Duck The WDSF Communications team has arrived in Hong Kong only days after the equivalent of Tyrannosaurus rex in the rubber duck species made its first appearance in the harbour here.

The flights from Europe were packed - most likely because of today being a holiday there and  Europeans (those who can afford it) flying in for a long weekend of sightseeing and shopping.

On the bus ride from the airport to the hotel we met up with Valentin Lusin, all by his lonely self. His parther Renata Busheeva got bumped off the flight. The airline refused to transport her with only a temporary travel document.

Renata stayed back to get her passport on Friday - remember: today's a holiday - and fly 48 hours later. Valentin's obersvation: "It feels like only half of me is here. A very unfamiliar sensation; we always travel together."
