The 2011 GrandSlam Finals

Last Weekend: Seoul, KOR 01/12/2011

2011 Hyundai Card Super Match XII - DanceSport Last weekend: Seoul, KOR! This weekend: Salou, ESP! Play of words aside, we promised you a more extensive report on the Hyundai Card Super Match 12 - DanceSport by the WDSF General Secretary Shawn Tay and here its is ...

Ten of our champions in the WDSF Standard, Latin and Professional Divisions will remember the ”Hyundai Card Super Match 12 – DanceSport” as a most important event whereby our DanceSport champions were honoured at one of the greatest DanceSport shows in the world.

The “Hyundai Card Super Match 12-DanceSport” is certainly the biggest DanceSport show ever staged. The 8,000-strong audience set the stage for a most memorable performance for both our top athletes as well as their fans who packed the newly renovated SK Handball stadium in the Olympic Park of South Korea over the 2-day show.

The organiser, SEMA Sports Marketing, is a top marketing agency in Korea that represents Hyundai Card, a subsidiary of the business giant Hyundai. SEMA is also an event organizer that has brought in renowned names like Andrea Bocelli and Whitney Houston to Korea. The Super Match is a sports event organized annually by SEMA, which has included the superstars in Golf and Tennis in past events. This year, SEMA has introduced DanceSport into their Super Match series.

SEMA first contacted KFD, our member body in Korea, Sutu Ok from KFD was tasked to coordinate the project between SEMA and the WDSF. The plan was finalized only in early October. I had the unenviable task of putting up a team that will impress the organiser in just one week.

2011 Hyundai Card Super Match XII - DanceSport All athletes arrived two days before the event and spent a day rehearsing the show in the stadium. There was a special request from the organizer to have all our athletes dancing to a very famous Korean song “Nobody”. All our athletes put in great effort in learning the closing show number. Both my wife Gladys and I had the greatest pleasure of choreographing and working with the team of most enthusiastic champions. In the evening, 4 couples - Domenico and Gioia, Benedetto and Claudia, Alexei and Anna, Zoran and Tatsiana - were invited to run a special workshop in the most up-market shopping arcade ‘The Time Square’. Many entries were received from the eager participants. Through a special selection process which included me as a judge through the internet, 6 couples were selected to receive free coaching during the Dance Box workshop at the Times Square. The organizer set up a very elaborate stage with a first-class dance floor and a full video wall with TV coverage. The public was given a chance to watch a short demonstration by our champions and witness how a DanceSport lesson is being conducted.

On the first day of the show, all couples presented three of their favorite show numbers. The crowd was extremely warm and receptive, making it a little difficult for each of our champions to leave the floor after every number. Eventually three numbers were cancelled as the show exceeded the broadcast time of the television. The entire event was broadcasted by two out of three television stations in Seoul.

2011 Hyundai Card Super Match XII - DanceSport The second day of the show was held earlier at four in the afternoon. The crowd seemed to be even more energetic than before. Each couple performed two numbers of their own. In all, the closing number with the Korean song made the audience go wild. It was really a most memorable number as there will not be another occasion that ten famous WDSF champions will come together for such a performance. At the end of the show, while we were taking a group photo, hundreds of fans rushed down to the floor but had to be stopped by the security guards. Some were lucky enough to get to shake hands with our champions and this is definitely a moment for all to remember.

For me, seeing four of our PD champions working together with six of our Standard and Latin champions in great harmony gave me the greatest satisfaction and the assurance that we are in one big WDSF family.

Very often when news cannot get the best pictures, they still have to use whatever material they can get! This is what I have got from my own camera in between organising the show - just in case we get nothing in the end. You should use this and if we are lucky enough, SEMA marketing will keep their promise to give some videos to us ...

Grand Slam on facebook After WDSF had exceeded the limit of 5,000 friends on facebbook, it started to think about what to do next ...

And whatever needed to be done to keep on going, it had to happen prior to the upcoming weekend and the Grand Slam Finals in Salou, ESP.

So here's the scoop: WDSF has finally made the switch from profile to page, moving its 4,999 friends along and creating a new presence on what is the uncontested # 1 among the social media. Staking out new claims on facebook, "Wdsf DanceSport" continues to exist - albeit under a new user name: wdsfisdancesporttotal.

Prior to Saturday's Grand Slam Final Standard, we hope to have everything set up properly for you to be able to follow the competition through facebook as well. All our other social media outlets - twitter and YouTube - remain unchanged.

It is with great pleasure that we follow Daniel Bachmann's suggestion and incorporate these videos into our Gallery ... and post one of them right here. The top three couples in the Main Class with their performances in the final of the WRRC World Championship 2011!

Some of the couples who will be in Salou this weekend passed the last one in Seoul, KOR. It was billed as the ultimate match in DanceSport - more precisely, the "Hyundai Card Super Match 12" - and it pitched (something almost unheard of until now) "regular" couples against professionals. The DanceSport invitational held at the handball arena of Seoul's Olympic Park saw an extravaganza that (some say) set new standards in terms of spectacle and involved only very few couples: 10! Here are the results ...

Hyundai Card Super Match 12 | DanceSport | Standard

1. Domenico Soale and Gioia Cerasoli ITA – PD
2. Federico Di Toro and Anastasia Tarlykova RUS – PD

Super Match 12: Participants A more extensive report by WDSF General Secretary Shawn Tay is soon to follow on this website. For the time being, try to identify the six (6) couples who will have made the journey from Seoul to Salou (what a ring that has to it) ... We even have a photograph of all the participants ... And another promotional video featuring the team ITALY LATIN (in Seoul as well as in Salou)!

New WDSF Judging System In the final of the 2011 Grand Slam Finals, with each dance performed as solo, the adjudicators will grade the couples on the above scale, awarding them points from 1 to 10, with a possibility of awarding half points (.5) too. And, most importantly, each and every one of the six couples is judged seperately on what is an absolute scale of perfection.

Prior to that spectacular stage in the competition, the same adjudicators will decide on a comparison-based basis, i.e. on the virtues of the traditional skating system, as to who will move from round one to two and on to the final.

Salou Is Ready! 29/11/2011

Welcome to Salou

In a press conference, the organisers of the XIIIth Spanish Open and the representatives of the host city Salou outlined their expectations for an event that will bring 1,680 couples to the Golden Coast (Costa Daurada) between 2 and 6 December.

From left: Mas, Granados, Freitag The Mayor Pere Granados and the President of the World DanceSport Federation, Carlos Freitag, emphasised the importance of the Spanish Open, held in Salou for 13 consecutive years, and in particular of the Grand Slam Finals as its absolute highlight in 2011.

"The best DanceSport in the world will undoubtedly be shown in Salou this weekend," said Freitag, referring to the quality of the couples who will compete in the Grand Slam Finals.

Mayor Granados pointed to the economic situation in Spain and around the world when he stated that "in times of crisis it is even more important that institutions and the private sector work together in ventures that bring activity to the city and help it to regain dynamism".

Antonio Mas, the organiser of the Spanish Open, thanked the city of Salou for its continued support to DanceSportr and gave a brief rundown of what to expect over the six days at the Municipal Sports Hall. "Salou will get a good return in terms of exposure," Mas said. Six hours of television will be produced on the Grand Slam Finals and the other events, International Opens among them.

Additionally, the two Grand Slam Finals will be covered on this blog and through a YouTube live stream on 3 and 4 December.

The 2011 Finals 28/11/2011

The 2011 Finals With all the participating couples now confirmed, WDSF Communications releases the official brochure "THE FINALS 2011" ...

A Spanish version of the brochure will be distributed to the public in Salou. All photographs in the publication have been taken by Prof Helmut Roland at World and Euopean Championships as well as Grand Slam events throughout the year.

As stated on page two of the publication, WDSF encourages everyone following the 2011 Grand Slam Finals to make another donation to the ongoing relief efforts by the Japan Red Cross Society after the earthquake and tsunami there.

IDSF urges all visitors to worlddancesport.org to donate to the Red Cross relief efforts in Japan (here).

And Who's Not ... 25/11/2011

Air Konovaltsev - Konovaltseva The # 4 ranked couple in the world, Sergei Konovaltsev and Olga Konovaltseva, RUS, will not be dancing in the 2011 Grand Slam Final Standard. We don't really know why they have declined even though they had qualified hands down, but we assume that the brother-sister team must have valid reasons for not travelling to the Golden Coast next weekend.

Since some of us (photographers and videographers) at WDSF Communications are great fans of their very particular style in Standard (I hope we're allowed to mention that here without offending anyone, or, even worse, without influencing the judges), we can only say: "Air Konovaltsev shall be sorely missed!"

Another Russian couple, Danil Ulanov and Irina Gogoladze, will not compete either. But even so, Russia will field the strongest contingent with five couples.
