More videos and many pictures were taken last night during the welcome party on Melbourne's highest ground, the 88th floor of Eureka Tower aka "Skydeck." Heidi Goetz interviewed the event director Margaret Lonsdale and quite a few of the couples in tomorrow's World Standard, while Helmut Roland captured some of the atmosphere ... and the magic as well!
Here is a first selection of pictures, more of them will be available from the WDSF facebook page.
The official reception/welcoming party/get-together that precedes Sunday's World Standard in Melbourne, AUS, was the occasion for the organisers and the sanctioning body to welcome the 75 couples from 46 countries to downunder.
The reception/party/gathering was held at maximum elevation available in Melbourne: 300 metres above the ground, on the Skydeck (the 88th floor) of the Eureka Tower. The latter is located on the southern banks of the Yarra river and perfectly positioned for 360 degree, floor-to-ceiling views encompassing Melbourne's sports precinct, Port Phillip Bay, Docklands and everything in between.
The 4-minute video below affords you at least some of the views that the participants got to enjoy from high up. And it provides a summary of the speeches held by those who make Sunday's event happen.
It was a memorable World Championship Standard that ended with what some considered a surprise in Moscow on 29 October 2011. At the time, we wrote on our official championship blog ...
Who said that there are hardly ever real surprises in DanceSport. Well, we have just had one today. Benedetto Ferruggia and Claudia Koehler, GER, fell short of their ambitious goal to win the World Champion title for the third consecutive time. After the final tally of the marks, the runners-up in the 2010 edition of the World Standard came in first this time around.
Some people here in Moscow say that it was one of the tightest competitions ever. The experts felt that they would have had a very hard time to make the call, that they saw two opposing styles clash on the parquet, and that they are in agreement with the verdict of the panel of Adjudicators.
Well, the protagonists in last year's final will return for another go at one another on Sunday. But their roles have been changed. Let's look back at the 2011 World Standard.
75 couples representing 46 countries have been entered in the 2012 World Standard in Melbourne, AUS, by their National Member Bodies.
By comparison, the 2011 World Standard in Moscow, RUS, registered 72 couples and only 40 countries.

From the 2012 World DanceSport Championship Standard at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne, AUS, WDSF Communications is able to offer you a LIVE STREAM through the DanceSport Total YouTube channel. It will be embedded right here on this blog as well.
The stream is courtesy of the organisers and the host broadcaster. Please let us know in advance that you will be sitting in and watching the webcast by clicking on JOIN right here. This will allow us to notify you about the exact schedule.
An instant result service will also be available through the result section of this website. The scrutineering software by David Hadfield and Dallas Williams has been made compatible with the WDSF requirements and will allow for the results and the lists of qualified couples to be published after every round. In fact, the starting list for Sunday's World Standard is already published here!
Over the coming days, a WDSF Communications team will report extensively from Australia's sporting capital Melbourne and the 2012 WDSF World DanceSport Championship Standard held there on Sunday 2 December.
The team has arrived downunder after the never-ending journey and has joined athletes, officials and organisers at the official reception taking place at the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. Quite a vantage point to take in the bigger picture the city has to offer to the visitors from abroad!
