Anton Skuratov - Alena Uehlin, GER, dance the Waltz in round 1 of the 2014 WDSF GrandSlam Standard in Tallinn, EST, on 23 February.
In the words of Ferran Castanyer, our cameraman and editor: "It had to be an Ukrainian couple first today with everything that's happening in that country!"
Daniil Ulanov - Kateryna Isakovych, UKR, dance the Waltz in round 1 of the 2014 WDSF GrandSlam Standard in Tallinn, EST, on 23 February.
We just received a batch of photographs taken by our collaborator Marina Melnikova from an exceptionally well attended International Open taking place in Moscow this weekend. Check the Gallery!
And by taking a look at the calendar section on this website you will conclude that two other competitions are in progress in Latvia's capital Riga and in a not too distant Helsinki, FIN.
Maybe it is too much at once for this region - even if it thrives on DanceSport!
Interview with the WDSF Sports Director Marco Sietas ahead of the 2014 WDSF GrandSlam Standard in Tallinn, EST, on 23 February. What explains such a low turnout for today's GrandSlam Standard?
Wanting to find out the possible reasons for such a low turnout today, we ask those who are here why the others didn't show. We know that this doesn't make much sense - but anyway. Here's a first interview with Anton Skuratov - Alena Uehlin, GER, ahead of the 2014 WDSF GrandSlam Latin in Tallinn, EST, on 23 February.
The organisers have held off as long as possible with the publication of an official starting list, but now - one hour after the first round was scheduled to start - they have release it.
Only 47 couples will dance tonight, and the first round has been pushed back to a start at 16:30 Tallinn time.
Whatever the reason for the low turnout, it will defdinitely not affect the quality of dancing by thos who are here.

Close to midnight, in the city centre, hungry and with all restaurants closing for the night ... Don't despair! Go straight to the Tallinn Town Hall, walk around it until you get to a darkish entrance to an even darker ... well, dungeon would probably be the most befitting name at first sight ... and step right in.
You have arrived at III Draakon, an establishment serving the best medieval food in town.
Order the elk meat soup, the wild boar sausage and other delicacies together with a homebrew or a cider.
It's not a King Arthur's theme park restaurant, it's the real thing in an incomparable setting and with great food at a great price. Even though it has not been included in the Guide Michelin, III Draakon ranks very high on Trip Advisor. And it is herewith fully endorsed by the WDSF Communications team too!
It should be possible to publish an official starting list for the GrandSlam Standard within the next hour. After yesterday's strike by security personnel at the Frankfurt airport left quite a few participants stranded overnight, they seem to be making their way to Tallinn and to the Audentese Sports Hall.
Sports Director Marco Sietas is glad to report that a full 12-member panel of Adjudicators will be available by the time the first round Standard gets underway at 14:30.
We are following up on yesterday's post regarding the judging system used by the International Skating Union and the veritable shitstorm that was triggered after what media had labbelled a controversial final result in women's free skating at the Sochi Olympics.
"How Sotnikova Beat Kim, Move by Move" is how the New York times titled an insightful article by Adam Leib, a coach and technical expert in figure skating. The varying degrees of difficulty in the routines performed by Adelina Sotnikova and Kim Yu-na were the decisive factors deciding over first and second in Leib's view.
Who said conspiracy?

Sometimes you have to be an expert to make these finer distinctions. But on the other hand, can one expect the general public to ever reach a level of sufficient grasp to appreciate them?
The Audentese Sports Hall undergoes significant changes as it gets converted from a track and field venue to one for DanceSport. Lots of people working very hard and against to clock to make it all happen.
Post-Shanghai ... Pre-Tallinn ... A brief look back at the 2013 GrandSlam Final Standard that was danced on 15 December in Shanghai, CHN.
WDSF Communications on 22 February 2014 17:01
They are leaving out important points in this article.
An evaluation sheet from the judges were made public which showed 0 in one of Yuna's jumps - in the short program where she made no mistakes .
They put 4 Russian people as judges out of the 14.
Adelina Sotnikova achieved her best score of 149.95 which was 0.11 away from Yu-na Kim's world record of 150.06 despite an obvious stumble in her long program.
Adelina scored 18 points higher than her previous best.
This is NOT for Yuna Kim, this is for the FAIR SPORTSMANSHIP THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE CENTRAL TO THE WORLD EVENT OF THE OLYMPICS.
Stop sticking our heads in the sand before we ruin judged sport forever
