Strike in Frankfurt 21/02/2014

Frankfurt A strike by security personnel at the Frankfurt airport affects the GrandSlam Standard of tomorrow in as far as that the main European hub to Tallinn seems to be at least partially down for the day.

Several judges and participating couples called in from Frankfurt, saying that their flights had been cancelled and their journeys to Estonia postponed until tomorrow.

Between WDSF Sports Director Marco Sietas and organiser Ivo Kappet a postponement of round one by several hours is already being discussed.

And since the WDSF Communications team does not have a live broadcast schedule to respect this weekend, we say: "No problem!"

On Air Promotion 21/02/2014

The Tallinn organisers promoted the upcoming GrandSlam by putting in an appearance in the evening programme of the Estonian Television yesterday. Another one is scheduled for Tallinn TV today!

Not Entirely Without Controversy ... 21/02/2014

Ice Dancing © IOC Over the past few days we looked at the judging system that is used by the International Skating Union (ISU) for the evaluation and scoring of figure skating performances.

Adjudicators Anonymous

While some journalists, and presumably experts, expressed their disagreement with the final results in the team and the ice dance events already, last night's win of Adeline Sotnikova, RUS, in the women's free skate saw the media up their tone and speak of "home field inflation" or worse.

Possible conflicts of interest and the lack of accountability for the nine judges were pointed out in media reports around the world.

Sydney Morning Herald: IOC PLays Down Skating Controversy

As DanceSport emulates the ISU evaluation process and uses a system that is virtually identical when it comes to the judging of programme components (except for the public accountability of adjudicators) WDSF should continue to monitor the post-Sochi discussions in this matter closely.

Where Are …? 21/02/2014

Sergey Konovaltsev - Olga Konovaltseva © Römling A number of couples that the organisers and everybody else here in Tallinn, EST, had expected to compete in the upcoming GrandSlam are MIA. At the very least, they are not yet on the starting list ...

With late entries still trickling in, according to chief organiser Ivo Kappet, there is still hope that some of them might show up at the last minute.

When it comes to "Air Konovaltsev" and WDSF ranking competitions, Sergey and Olga were last seen at the GrandSlam Finals in Shanghai, CHN, in December.

Where are …? Where are …?

For The Avoidance of Any Doubt ... 18/02/2014

Live from Tallinn, EST We just received a phone call from Ivo Kappet, Vice President of the Estonian DanceSport Association and chief organiser of the GrandSlam in Tallinn, advising us that we had Saturday's and Sunday's programmes mixed up. This has been corrected instantly in the previous posts and, for the avoidance of any doubt, we confirm once more:

  • GrandSlam Standard on Saturday 22 February
  • GrandSlam Latin on Sunday 23 February

We apologise to Ivo for getting his blood pressure und pulse rate up unnecessarily - ahead of the weekend - and to the followers for causing confusion.

Starting List | Standard 18/02/2014

Emanuel Valeri - Tania Kehlet, DEN © Jochen Römling We can only hope that the preliminary starting list for the GrandSlam Standard to be danced on Saturday in Tallinn, EST, is merely testimony to the fact that humans are procrastinators.

Seriously, quite a number of big names are missing. And 46 couples is hardly enough for a competition of this caliber.

Let's hope that the organisers will get flooded by late entries over the coming days, and that come Sunday the first round will need to get danced in six heats or more!

Only five days left for a last-minute registration!

Here are the 46 couples registered as of 16 February.

Starting List | Latin 18/02/2014

Berlin, GER - 30 November © Roland Below is the preliminary starting list for Sunday's GrandSlam Latin in Tallinn, EST.

So far, 54 couples have entered. From the GrandSlam Latin Final in Shanghai it is Marius-Andrei Balan - Nina Bezzubova, GER, who are the highest placed couple (4th) not yet on the list.

With the second GrandSlam Latin leg taking place in Hong Kong, on 31 May,  it is good to see that four couples from there have travelled to Estonia.
