Dance As National Sport 07/08/2015

DanceSport in Colombia

Alvaro Lopez Gil, a member of the House of Representatives, and Mauricio Delgado, a Senator, presented the Bill that will officially declare dance as a national sport in Colombia on 5 August.

It should not come as a surprise that both parliamentarians hail from Cali. Not only is Cali the world capital of Salsa, during The World Games that were held in 2013, all of DanceSport had its stellar moments there.

17,000 spectators flocked to the Cali bullring on each of two consecutive nights to watch DanceSport at its very best. Colombian sports minister Andrés Botero, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, described the unique atmosphere afterwards: "It was something spectacular, something never seen in Colombia or in South America: watching the best dancers in the world compete in the Waltzes, the Tango, ... the Salsa! Beautiful! And that we were able to sell out the Cali bullring with DanceSport - something that had not happened in the last 17 years!"
