Performing Rights 13/03/2014

YouTube GEMA, the Society for Rights to Musical Performance and Mechanical Reproduction, is the PRO, the Performing Rights Organisation, for Germany. As such, it is certainly one of the world's most thorough collectors of royalties from those making use of music that is composed and played by others.

To many GEMA is best known for its stand in an ongoing negotiation with YouTube regarding the music in the videos that are uploaded there.

In a strong contrast, the German DanceSport Federation (DTV) and its President Franz Allert were able to negotiate a new contract between GEMA and the German Olympic Sports Confederation that covers the public performance of music in sports events. DTV and Allert were able to secure significant discounts on the GEMA rates for all the national federations of sports that use music as an integral part of the sporting performances. Congratulations!
