Together with partner Joanne Clifton, he had just won his seventh World Champion title in Merano, ITA.
While Paolo and Joanne stood once more on the highest echelon of the podium, the Master of Ceremony read out a declaration announcing Paolo's retirement from active competition.
Paolo is without a doubt one of the most prolific dancers of recent times. Together with Silvia Pitton (through 2011) and Joanne Clifton (from 2012) he won everything there is to win - world and continental championships as amateur as well as professional.
No surprise therefore that Paolo was the first ever recipient of the WDSF Athlete's Award. On 19 September and on the occasion of the World DanceSport Games 2013 Athletes' Party in Kaohsiung, TPE, he received the award from the hands of WDSF President Carlos Freitag.
Paolo informed the press in Merano that he would be dedicating himself "full-time to the world of teaching."
