WDSF Partners with AI Pioneer Sidewalk to Forge the Future of Virtual Sport and Olympic Dance Esports
STEPIN designated as the Official Dance Esports Platform of the WDSF; Strategic agreement ratified at the WDSF AGM and Global Forum in Rome.
ROME, ITALY – 14 June 2026 – The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), the International Olympic Committee (IOC)-recognised world governing body for DanceSport, has officially announced a historic strategic partnership with Sidewalk Entertainment Inc., an innovative Korean technology startup specialising in real-time, on-device motion-recognition artificial intelligence (AI).
Formally ratified during the WDSF Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the 2026 WDSF Global Forum in Rome, Italy, this landmark agreement officially designates Sidewalk’s proprietary AI-powered dance platform, STEPIN, as the Official Dance Esports Platform of the WDSF.
The collaboration marks a transformative shift in the global sports landscape, uniting the regulatory authority and heritage of the WDSF with advanced computer vision technology to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for a brand-new discipline: physical esports.
A Digital Gateway: Democratising DanceSport Globally
At its core, the partnership aims to lower the traditional socio-economic and geographical barriers to entry that have historically limited access to competitive dance. By utilizing Sidewalk’s proprietary motion-tracking AI, the STEPIN platform precisely measures, evaluates, and scores technical precision, timing, and expressiveness using only a smartphone camera. This entirely eliminates the need for expensive wearable sensors, specialised controllers, or high-end hardware, making elite sport accessible to anyone with a mobile device.
Reflecting on the philosophical driving force behind the platform, Kibong Kook, CEO of Sidewalk Entertainment Inc., emphasized that technology serves as an entry point rather than a replacement for physical sport.
"At its heart, this partnership is not simply about moving DanceSport into the digital space," Kook stated. "It is about delivering the essential value of DanceSport to far more people, with a far lower barrier to entry. Our vision is to make STEPIN the global digital gateway to DanceSport. A teenager who begins dancing with STEPIN in their own room could move on to National Competitions, then to the world stage governed by WDSF, and ultimately to the Olympic Esports arena."
A Structured Global Pathway for Virtual Athletes
To transform this vision into a regulated competitive reality, the WDSF and Sidewalk are co-developing a dedicated international tournament structure within the STEPIN platform. This ecosystem will roll out progressively, introducing global online qualification events that transition seamlessly into official national, continental, and world championships.
This software enables local federations to run automated, sponsor-backed competitions with zero operational overhead, allowing organizers to independently secure local partnerships. To actively foster grassroots development, the STEPIN Tournament Toolkit will allow small-scale local competitions to be hosted entirely free of charge. For larger international tournaments, the platform provides a highly cost-effective digital alternative, significantly reducing the financial and logistical burdens associated with traditional offline sports event management.
"We bear the technical and operational burden so that NMBs can focus on their essential roles, namely governance and athlete development," explained Kook. "Because STEPIN is mobile-based, young talents in regions that existing DanceSport infrastructure never reached are naturally drawn onto the platform. NMBs can identify these rising newcomers on a data-driven basis and connect them to the national team pathway."
Safeguarding Sport Integrity and Grassroots Commercials
Addressing institutional demands for fairness and technical transparency, the STEPIN platform utilizes a rigorous hybrid judging system. While high-volume online qualifiers will be managed entirely by objective, tamper-resistant AI logs, elite finals will blend automated technical data with human insight from a dedicated panel of WDSF-appointed judges. Kook made it clear that final authority over all sporting outcomes remains strictly within traditional sporting structures: "Technology is ultimately a tool; we make it clear that the final authority over sporting integrity is held by the governing body, WDSF. This is precisely why STEPIN can function not merely as a game, but as an official sports platform."
Furthermore, the commercial framework of the partnership has been explicitly engineered to protect and fund the grassroots level of the sport. Platform operating and server infrastructure costs are being completely absorbed by Sidewalk to ensure Local Organising Committees (LOCs) can launch tournaments without financial risk. Notably, the partnership introduces an innovative revenue-sharing model that properly recognizes and compensates choreographers and dancers when their original routines are used globally for challenges and competitions.
"The conclusion we reached after lengthy discussion is clear: 'Do not place a burden on the grassroots; support it, and grow together,'" Kook noted. "When a dance created by a choreographer becomes popular and many people pay to use it for practice, challenges, and tournaments, the choreographer receives a portion of that revenue. This marks the point at which choreography copyright, long regarded as an unavoidable burden... finally begins to be properly recognised."
Honoring Tradition, Embracing the Olympic Future
While the partnership propels DanceSport into the expanding realm of the Olympic Esports Games, both organisations remain deeply committed to preserving the artistic soul of the discipline. Rather than drawing players away from physical studios, the mobile application and its physical event counterpart, STEPIN Arcade, are built to act as a direct bridge back to traditional dance floors.
"Technology cannot replace the artistry of a dancer," Kook reassured the global dance community. "AI can measure movement, but the emotion and expression a dancer creates on stage, that unique soul, is not an object of measurement but an object of respect. What STEPIN does is help more people discover, begin, and fall in love with that artistry and athleticism. Tradition and innovation are not in competition."
The union of these two fields sets a definitive standard for how international federations can successfully navigate the digital frontier while staying true to their foundational values. Celebrating the signing during the formal ceremony at the 2026 WDSF Global Forum in Rome, WDSF President Shawn Tay captured the shared optimism and long-term vision of this historic milestone:
"WDSF and STEPIN have a bright future together, following the footsteps of the Olympic movement and the new generations who are the future of DanceSport," stated Shawn Tay.
