SPOT Loosen Up 25/04/2016

SPOT Wiseman Ndela, the developer of an app that serves to make quality information on DanceSport available to dancers in South Africa, sent us a brief description.

Hello WDSF Communications Team!

App Creator: Thobile Mbatha
App Developer: Wiseman Ndlela

SPOT the app is purely aimed at assisting in growing DanceSport in Africa. The awareness of DanceSport has grown tremendously through the years in our continent but dancers especially the less privileged from townships have found it difficult to have achievable goals due to no proper motivation. With this app, we are bringing real dance life stories to everyone in a form of dance videos and interviews. The dance community can now follow their favorite as they grow in their dance partnerships as the year progresses. We will also show practice sessions and training sessions. This will help upcoming dancers to see what it takes to become successful in DanceSport and thus help them set goals for themselves.

We are literally breaking boundaries and walls so that we can once again have a World Champion that is 100% African in the not so distant future. Africa has talent and ability that only just needs to be given a fair chance.

Challenges

  • The major challenge we have had so far is proper videoing tools like cameras (hence we still use our phones).
  • Another challenge is also overcoming the fact that our local comps have no proper lighting so the videos aren’t as crisp.
  • We currently have no budget for this kind of exercise and it’s a blessing that I am a developer so I developed the app, however it proves to be quite expensive to try move around and capture videos from competitions. We still have to pay for data to upload the footage onto our cloud server for the app.

These challenges have been the same driving force for us to overcome them. We are motivated by the fact that we as the African continent will soon have our own World Champion and perhaps a Grand Slam held on our soil. We firmly believe that the time for Africa has come. All that is needed is for us to believe, for us to motivate and pull together, because the world is waiting and ready.

We shall also be following a group of our athletes attending GOC 2016 very closely as it is such events and African participation that build confidence and hope for our dancers.

We don’t wait for the Federation to do something for us, we stand up and do it ourselves.

Thank you for this coverage as it will really really go a long way.
