Meet The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Athletes: B-Boy Sunny, a Story of Dedication
B-Boy Sunny makes history as the first-ever Breaker representing Hong Kong, China at the YOG, and he shares his philosophy with us.
From discovering deep inspiration in Hip-Hop culture to carrying the flag for Hong Kong, China, Sunny Lin, known in the Breaking world as B-Boy Sunny, is stepping into the international spotlight. As the first-ever Breaker to represent Hong Kong at the Youth Olympic Games, Sunny heads to Dakar 2026 with the big purpose of bringing Olympic glory back home and challenging the world’s best.
A Story of Personal Style
Embodying the mature mindset of a DanceSport athlete, Sunny considers artistic self-expression and connection as important as technical execution within the sport. For the Hong Kong Breaker, stepping onto the world’s stage is about embracing Breaking as a culture rather than a mere race for results.
“My B-Boy name, Sunny, represents positivity and a steady source of energy. It serves as a reminder to remain confident and composed regardless of the situation in a Battle. Whenever I step into a cipher, I allow myself to fully embrace the atmosphere, connect with fellow dancers, and enjoy the art of dance itself, rather than focusing solely on winning or losing”, B-Boy Sunny explains
His movement vocabulary is the product of continuous and nonstop exploration, refining footwork, developing concepts, and analyzing each Battle to unlock full potential. For Sunny, every exchange inside the cypher offers an opportunity to evolve: “I learn from the approaches and ideas of different dancers, then adapt and reconstruct them according to my own physical attributes and style.”, Sunny adds.
That curiosity has shaped an athlete who values genuineness. Beyond reaching podiums, his primary objective is to leave an authentic personal signature every time he steps onto the floor:
“My goal is to create something that is uniquely mine, rather than simply pursuing difficulty for its own sake.” – B-Boy Sunny.
Times of difficulties: the real challenge
But the explosive rounds witnessed on the stage represent only a small fraction of an athlete’s reality. For B-Boy Sunny, the most significant test of his career arrived when he faced a physical setback and performance frustration at the same time: the navigation of an injury while going through what he calls a “performance plateau”. During these times, rather than viewing it as a roadblock, the experience revolutionizes his entire approach to the art and sport.
“I restructured my training programme by integrating rehabilitation, physical conditioning, technical refinement, competitive mindset development, and adaptability in Battle situations”, Sunny explains.
Overcoming an injury alongside unexpected results demanded immense mental work and discipline. The process reinforced the essential truth that athletic maturity and growth are forged through patience, persistence, and continuous self-discovery.
Yet his endurance was anchored by something bigger than personal ambition. Sunny drew strength from the foundations of his biggest inspirations:
“The pioneers and outstanding active dancers who remain true to the old-school spirit of Breaking while constantly pushing creative boundaries. Their exceptional musicality, distinctive personal styles, and strong competitive mindset have taught me that Breaking is not only a sport, but also a powerful form of cultural expression.”, B-Boy Sunny explains.
Through a lot of psychological and physical work as well as resilience, Sunny transformed an obstacle into a catapult, turning adversity into the catalyst that helped to propel him to the Olympic stage.
A Promise to the Breaking Culture
Deeply rooted in the foundations of Breaking and committed to its essence, B-Boy Sunny looks forward to portraying Breaking not only as a high-performance sport, but as the authentic art that it is. Days away from experiencing this milestone, his gratitude goes out to the people who stood beside him along his journey:
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the DanceSport Association of Hong Kong, China Limited, my coaches, my family, and all the dancers who have trained, shared, and grown alongside me throughout this journey.”, Sunny says.
As he prepares to step onto the Olympic stage, he leaves the global Breaking community an enduring commitment, which aligns with the philosophy that took him to the world’s biggest Breaking stage:
“I will continue to stay true to my roots, respect the culture, maintain my passion for the art form, learn from outstanding dancers around the world, and strive to push my limits as both an athlete and a representative of the Breaking community.” – B-Boy Sunny
