Breaking New Ground: The Duke of Edinburgh´s International Award at the Brisbane World Breaking Dancesport Festival

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) is proud to support innovative programmes that empower young people, foster personal development, and create meaningful opportunities to explore their passions. This year, the Brisbane World Breaking Dancesport Festival will showcase a unique collaboration between WDSF, DanceSport Australia, the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), and the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Duke of Ed) in Australia.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a globally recognised Framework that manages and accredits students non-formal education, helping young people aged 14–24 develop life skills, resilience, and a sense of responsibility through four core areas: Skills, Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. Across Australia, tens of thousands of young people participate each year, supported by a network of dedicated adult volunteers.

Breaking, the dynamic Olympic sport combining creativity, athleticism, and discipline, will be integrated into the Duke of Ed Framework at the Festival. Young Australians will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop skills: Master new moves, choreography, or performance techniques.
  • Contribute to their communities: Mentor younger dancers or support local programs.
  • Stay active and healthy: Build strength, flexibility, and endurance through regular practice.
  • Challenge themselves: Participate in adventurous journeys and collaborative performances that foster teamwork and resilience.

Expanding Access Through Free Workshops

As part of WDSF and DanceSport Australia´s ongoing mission to grow the sport of Breaking in the region, an exclusive, free Breaking programme will be offered at PCYC Logan during school holidays. Delivered by the renowned Elements Collective and led by two of Australia’s top breakers, B-boy Ralph and B-girl Mags, these workshops are designed to introduce participants to the foundations of Breaking, with activities tailored for beginners and two age groups (6–11 and 12–16 years old).

You can register by clicking here.

The sessions will take place from 13 to 16 January 2026, with morning time slots suited to each age group:

  • 9:00–10:00am – Ages 6–11
  • 10:00–11:00am – Ages 12–16

These workshops provide young people with a unique opportunity to get active, develop new skills, and enjoy a fun, engaging experience during the holidays, all while supported by the global expertise of WDSF, the national guidance of DanceSport Australia, and the highly regarded Duke of Ed Framework in Australia.

Through partnerships with PCYC centres across Queensland, this programme reaches young people in diverse, regional, and remote communities, ensuring equitable access to sport and personal development opportunities. By linking breaking with the Duke of Ed Award, WDSF is helping young Australians gain confidence, experience personal growth, and unlock pathways in education, employment, and community engagement.

As Shawn Tay, WDSF President, explains:

"Breaking is more than a sport; it represents a tool for growth, creativity, and resilience. By combining it with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, we are giving young Australians the chance to discover their potential while contributing to their communities and developing life skills that last a lifetime."

The Brisbane World Breaking Dancesport Festival reflects as a platform to inspire, empower, and leave a lasting legacy for young Australians. WDSF and DanceSport Australia are committed to working with schools, clubs, and youth organisations to ensure Breaking becomes a pathway for achievement, personal growth, and life-changing experiences.
