Champions: Plight or Blessing

DanceSport Total

We have asked several champions - past and present - whether they consider it to be easier to conquer a title for the first time than to defend it a second or third time. All of them, without exception, seemed to prefer the former, because being chased and having an opponent breath down one's neck can be an annoying experience.

2018 can go down in DanceSport history as the year of record endurance demonstrated by the two dominators of the Standard section: Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova, RUS, the reigning European Champions, could revalidate their title in tomorrow's championship for a second time. However, others before them have already done that: three titles is an outstanding achievement - but not much more.

On the other hand, winning it could set the mood for the remaining months of 2018, until the World Standard in Vienna, AUT, when Dmitry and Olga could win an unprecedented fourth title. Something Benedetto Ferruggia - Claudia Koehler, GER, Paolo Bosco - Silvia Pitton, ITA, as well as John and Betty Westley, England, did not do. And also something Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus, MDA, the three-time World Champions Latin, decided against trying to do when they turned professional last month.

The pressure is on and not just in Copenhagen, DEN, from 17 February at 17:00 (UTC/GMT +1h). Can Dmitry and Olga handle it?
