A Weekend of Global DanceSport Celebration: Highlights from Šamorín and Cali

Across two continents and two vibrant DanceSport communities, the weekend of 29–30 November 2025 showcased the diversity, growth, and spirit of our sport. From the long-standing tradition of the 14th Slovak Open Championship in Šamorín to the forward-looking Rhythm discipline test event in Cali, DanceSport once again united athletes, organisers, and federations in a shared celebration of movement and excellence.

Šamorín Hosts the 14th Slovak Open Championship at the X-Bionic Sphere

Šamorín, Slovakia – 29–30 November 2025. At the prestigious X-bionic sphere, an Official Olympic Training Centre, the 14th Slovak Open Championship brought together a strong field of athletes and an enthusiastic audience, continuing a tradition that spans nearly five decades of DanceSport history.

This year’s event brought together 216 registrations from 16 countries, including Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Ukraine. Approximately 250 spectators filled the venue each day, contributing to an energetic and supportive atmosphere.

A Championship with Deep Roots

This edition was especially meaningful, as it combined two iconic national events: the 47th Danube Cup and the 32nd Bratislava Open, reaffirming Šamorín’s place as a cornerstone of Slovak DanceSport. In recent years, the event has been organised by the Španík family, who continue to uphold the competition’s legacy with dedication and vision.

Distinguished Guests and Institutional Support

The event was honoured by the presence of Zuzana Rehák Štefečeková, Olympic gold medallist in trap shooting (Tokyo 2020) and double silver medallist (Beijing 2008, London 2012) and Zuzana Vodáčková, Director of the Foundation of the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee

The President of the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee (SOSC), Anton Siekel, shared a message underscoring the importance of the event days before it took place:

“I am convinced that you will find great conditions for your competition at the Olympic Training Centre in Šamorín. Masses of people have a passion for dance, in any of its forms. Your sport combines artistic and sporting performances, passion, movement, and discipline. I therefore gladly supported the organisers of the Slovak Open Championship.”

Cali Welcomes the Rhythm Discipline in a Landmark Test Event

Cali, Colombia – 29–30 November 2025. The Evangelista Mora Coliseum came alive with a vibrant celebration of DanceSport, bringing together athletes, coaches, families, and local enthusiasts for a weekend filled with energy and competition. The event offered a dynamic programme that included performances, workshops, and multiple WDSF Open categories, reinforcing Cali’s long-standing connection with dance and its commitment to developing the sport at all levels.

In addition to the main competition programme, Cali also took an important step forward in its DanceSport journey by hosting a test event for the Rhythm discipline, marking a significant milestone for the Colombian Federation of Dance and DanceSport. A total of 150 athletes took part in the activities, representing countries such as Colombia, Spain, the United States, and Ukraine. The test event played a crucial developmental role for the federation and local organisers, focusing on technical evaluation and discipline implementation.

Workshops and Professional Development

The event featured a comprehensive programme of workshops led by internationally recognised teachers, including: Giaccomo Scateglia, Maurizio Meoni, Patricia Jofre, Frank del Águila and Miguel Abreu.

These sessions provided dancers and coaches with valuable insights and training, helping establish a stronger foundation for the Rhythm discipline in the region.

A Preview of Cali’s 2026 International Multi-Discipline Event

This test event serves as a precursor to the International Multi-Discipline Dance Event to be held in 2026, aligned with celebrations for Cali’s 490th anniversary. With its rich cultural heritage and longstanding tradition in dance, the city is positioning itself as a future hub for DanceSport on the continent.

A Weekend to Remember

From the Olympic-level facilities of Šamorín to the pioneering spirit of Cali, the past weekend demonstrated the breadth and vitality of DanceSport worldwide. Tradition, innovation, and community came together to define two events that, while different in nature, shared the same commitment to excellence and growth.

Reflecting on the weekend, WDSF President Shawn Tay remarked:

“What we witnessed in Šamorín and Cali goes beyond competition. It highlights the commitment of our organisers, the passion of our athletes, and the global unity that DanceSport inspires. Together, we continue to build a sport that connects cultures and celebrates creativity at every level.”
