We have compiled a very abridged list of favourites to make the final in today's Grand Slam Latin. Based on the world rankings and the 2011 WDSF Grand Slam Final in Salou, ESP, we have come up with 11 couples for a poll among our visitors. Who do you believe will dance tonight's? Click on the six couples of your choice!
Saturday, 4 February, is day two of the Antwerp Stars Cup. The event got underway yesterday afternoon with a number of Rising Star and Senior competitions held at the Extra Time sports hall.
These ran until rather late last night, as many of the participants struggled to make it to the venue due to delays caused by the snow and the Siberian cold. Nearly all flights into Antwerp were delayed, deicing was the order of the day at most European airports, and the wintery roads were congested with stalled traffic in and around the city.
After travelling 500 km by car from Hannover in Germany, Prof Helmut Roland joined the WDSF Communications team araound 10 p.m., but not too late to still take a few photographs of the finals of the WDSF Rising Star Latin and the WDSF Senior I Standard. Enjoy!
Antwerp, like much of the rest of Europe, is under the influence of a Siberian cold spell. Light snow pairs with temperatures close to - 10º C to make life hard on those who choose to get out of the coziness of their homes - and even harder on the few who opt to travel great distances.
As the WDSF Communications team converges on Antwerp from different parts of Europe, we should soon hear their stories of delayed flights, stalled traffic, etc. So far, only Heidi Goetz made it to the hotel and from there on to the venue of the Antwerp Stars Cup. Just to make the last portion of her trip, which usually takes no more than 15 minutes, she spent in excess of an hour in the shuttle bus.
At the "Extra Time" sports hall, Heidi was informed that the organisers' phones were ringing of the hook virtually all day, with couples calling to say that they would be late. In a Senior III competition scheduled for earlier this afternoon, only 36 of 60 couples who had entered made it to the floor for the first call.
We will keep you informed on all future developments. And here are some pictures of a wintery Antwerp.
As we have mentioned here earlier, this blog will remain active from tomorrow, sometime in the afternoon, through Sunday, 5 February. The focus of the WDSF Communications team on location in Antwerp, BEL, will turn to the 2012 WDSF World DanceSport Championship Senior I Standard after the GrandSlam Latin is completed, something which is scheduled to happen around 11 p.m. on Saturday.
The organisers have already forwarded the official Starting List for the first 2012 World Championship too. And since we don't wan't to withhold any information, here it is!

We must have played on this once before. In any case, here it goes again! Dancing does get somewhat easier after a couple has a star (*) appearing behind its names. At least it gets to skip a round or two in major competitions. At the same time, this should be more than compensated for - in terms of the number of hours put in - since it does require a major effort to become a star couple in the first place.
The organisers have announced six star couples at this point for the Grand Slam in Antwerp, BEL, where round one is scheduled to get underway at 15:30 CET.
Andrey Zaytsev - Anna Kurzminskaya, RUS
Aniello Langella - Khrystyna Moshenska, ITA
Andrey Kiselev - Anastasia Selivanova, RUS
Gabriele Goffredo - Anna Matus, MDA
Andrey Gusev - Elizaveta Cherevichnava, RUS
Vladimir Karpov - Mariya Tzaptashvilli, RUS
Additional stars could get awarded after all entries have been confirmed and after the participating couples have picked up their starting numbers.
In any case, the list of six star couples reveals that the first Grand Slam leg will certainly be danced at the higehst level. Of the Latin finalists in Salou, the 2011 Grand Slam Final, only Martino Zanibellato - Michelle Abildtrup, DEN, and Timur Imametdinov - Ekaterina Nikolaeva, RUS, are missing. And we believe that they are getting ready for the next Latin leg in Copenhagen, DEN, on 18 February.
After a hiatus of only two months, WDSF Communications returns to publsihing "Live from ..." blogs with coverage on the premier events in the competition calendar. Starting the new season off with a bang, we offer you the customary blend of in-depth information, quality videos and (almost) instant results on two high-profile events held in Antwerp, Belgium, on 4 and 5 February.
