2013 GrandSlam Cambrils | EC Y STD

VII DO World DanceSport 29/03/2013

2012 World Youth Standard © Mutin The 2013 GrandSlam Cambrils | ESP events are embedded in a four-day DanceSport extravaganza: the seventh edition of DO World DanceSport. In fact, the GrandSlam Standard and Latin on 30 and 31 March, respectively, are just two of the highlights in a non-stop programme featuring some 30 competitions in different disciplines and age groups, all staged at the Cambrils Municipal Sports Hall.

  • 2013 WDSF European DanceSport Championship Youth Standard
  • 2013 European Cup for Clubs
  • 2013 Spanish Championships HipHop
  • 2013 Cambrils Open Wheelchair DanceSport
  • 2013 Cambrils Open Down (for dancers with Down Syndrome)
  • Plus a long list of Opens for age groups from Juvenile to Senior III

The 2013 European Youth Standard and the Spanish Championship HipHop are today's mainstay. One the former we start reporting live from about 16:00 CET, on the other Opens we will provide continuous live results - even between rounds - in the column on the right.

The Tourist Trail 28/03/2013

Live from Cambrils

We were just done writing a text on tourism in Cambrils for the Eurosport commentators ... Let's be honest here! We were done copying/pasting a text on tourism in Cambrils, ESP, when we discovered that Adjudicator Antun Maki, CRO, had posted photographs of his sightseeing tour around the coastal resort on facebook.

A far more convincing argument to visit than: "Cambrils is located right in the heart of the Costa Dorada – the Golden Coast – which is one of the primary tourist destinations of Catalonia. The short distance to other towns of great interest such as Roman Tarragona, Modernist Reus, Salou and the Priorat makes Cambrils the point of both departure and return for lots of different excursions that let visitors get an up-close look at what the region has to offer. Another big attraction is the Port Aventura theme park, which is only 10 kilometres away." Courtesy of the Tourist Office!

Live from Cambrils Live from Cambrils Absolutely no idea what we are looking at in the picture on the far left! But in the other one we detect that pirates don't induce any fears whatsoever in Antun ... And that "keep your hands off" is probably not forceful enough!

And yes: all pictures courtesy of Antun Maki!

The Supreme Challenge 28/03/2013

The Score As this will be the first GrandSlam of the 2013 Series and the opening act to what we all expect to be a long-term relationship with Eurosport, a significant amount of work goes into providing the network's research department with broad information on DanceSport. This department then passes the information together with the results of its own research on to the commentators. And in the end, if all works well, we should have an informed commentary in a about a dozen different languages added to the images that will get produced by a team made up of Highvideo Productions and WDSF Communications in Cambrils, ESP.

While Eurosport is able to field experts and seasoned commentators in more sports than any other broadcaster, DanceSport continues as somewhat of a start-up still. That makes it all the more challenging for those who will sit in a recording booth somehwere in Europe or Asia on Saturday and Sunday, adding their newly acquired insights and their voice to the action.

Here is an excerpt of some of the information sent to Eurosport Research on the GrandSlam results graphics.

Result GFX After each dance performed by groups of  generally 6 couples the results get published as a standing for the particular dance, with the scores of the couples reflected as a value between 4.00 and 40.00 in the right column. A second result screen could get inserted to reflect the standing of the couples and their total scores after a determined number of dances (e.g. final standing after 5 dances).

The Outlook 27/03/2013

Forecast Cambrils, ESP, will be the destination for about 3,000 dancers who will converge there over the long Easter weekend to take part in the competitions of the 2013 DO World DanceSport. Some will come from very far, there are entries from China and other Asian countries, and many will come from the cold (and snow) that currently prevails in Northern Europe. The news are good for all of them: temperatures in the range of 10 to 20 degrees Celsisus, sunny skies ...

Come on down! Or, if you cannot for whatever reason, follow some of the Cambrils action right here: the 2013 European Youth Standard plus the GrandSlam Standard and Latin on 29, 30 and 31 March respectively.

Berlin Forecast Also through this blog, you will be able to take in a continuous live stream of other competitions. These will be held in slightly more adverse weather conditions: the International Opens and Opens in Berlin, GER, as part of the traditional "Blue Ribbon" take place from 29 March through 1 April. A player with the live feed from the German capital will be embedded here from Friday.

The Look and Feel 25/03/2013

Lower Third Applying a consistent look to the programmes that are produced of the 12 competitions making up the WDSF GrandSlam Series 2013 is important. All the more so since the GrandSlam brand itself needs get transmitted to the international audience as well. Top-level DanceSport contested at different locations around the world, top-ranked couples fighting it out over the title of GrandSlam Champions for the year, etc.

In the past, WDSF Communications already used a full set of information graphics plus title and credit sequences identifying the GrandSlam programming as such. The overall look was developed by Kathy Lang, who also happens to be the designer of this website. With the arrival of the Judging System 2.0 and several other changes that had to be considered for 2013, Kathy went back to the drawing board an came up with a slightly different "look and feel" for the information graphics.

Meanwhile, another team of creative minds came up with a new opening sequence. This is still a very early draft.

Two Point Zero | World Premiere 24/03/2013

System 2.0 Graphics The Judging System 2.0 as a concept has first been presented to the international DanceSport community one month ago. Prior to that, the WDSF Sports Department and the developers of hardware and software had conducted exhaustive tests by scoring and rescoring hundreds of dances from tape with the new formula.

The Judging System 2.0 calls for 4 Components to be evaluated and for 12 adjudicators, working in 4 groups of 3 adjudicators each, to grade these on an absolute scale from 1 to 10.

  • Technical Quality – TQ
  • Movement to Music – MM
  • Partnering Skill – PS
  • Choreography and Presentation – CP

The system acknowledges that two Components cover technical aspects of the performance and that the other two assess the latter’s artistic qualities.

System 2.0 | In A Nutshell

On 29 March, the 12 WDSF Adjudicators making up the panel for the GrandSlam events in Cambrils, ESP, will undergo extensive training on the use of System 2.0. And the world premiere will follow on 30 March, when the system gets used for the first time from the group dances of the quarterfinal. You will be able to follow this premiere through the live TV graphics that have been designed for this purpose.

Live from Cambrils 23/03/2013

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) and the Eurosport network have entered into an agreement for the international broadcasting of the GrandSlam Series 2013. The pan-European sports network that also services the Asia-Pacific region through Eurosport Asia will carry extensive coverage on the five regular legs plus the finals.

Nine hours from the regular legs will be broadcast live on the channels Eurosport, Eurosport HD or Eurosport 2 as well as on Eurosport Asia. Two hours from the GrandSlam Finals in Shanghai, CHN, and one hour from the GrandSlam Standardin Beijing, CHN, will air on a delayed basis.

Eurosport All of this amounts to a very high level of international television exposure for DanceSport, its premier event series and its top athletes. But it also represents a formidable challenge for the GrandSlam organisers and for WDSF. Between them, they need to make sure that the quality of the GrandSlam coverage meets the highest international standards.

Starting with the GrandSlam Cambrils | ESP on 30 and 31 March, such coverage will be produced of the semi-final and final stages by a host broadcaster or a production company that is commissioned by the organisers. A set of guidelines authored by WDSF Communications ensures that these productions will be of certain uniformity when it comes to content and structure, and that they adopt a common look and feel that identifies them as parts of the coherent series.

For the first leg of the 2013 GrandSlam Series the following broadcast dates and times have been agreed upon between WDSF, Eurosport and organiser. Consider the change Central European Summer Time (UTC/GMT + 2 hours) from 31/03/2013!
