Caribbean Dances, Line Dance and Rock & Roll

For All Tastes

Day 3 at the World DanceSport Games 2013 Kaohsiung featured the DanceSport disciplines that are governed by WDSF Associate Members and Collaborating Organisations: Caribbean Dances, Line Dance and Rock & Roll. Can it get any more diverse and international than that? Of Cuban and Colombian origins the first styles – North American the others!

Rock & Roll brought 24 top couples to Kaohsiung, among them all the favourites from Russia, Poland, Switzerland and Germany. 12 couples out of the top 20 in the World Ranking had entered the WDSF World DanceSport Games in Kaohsiung.

A fairly standardised judging system was used in all three events to assess the performances of couples and individual dancers. In Rock & Roll, the couples received points for choreography, dance performance, foot technique and acrobatics. And to make the competition more exciting for participants and audience, the couples dance against one against one in the semi-final. The knock-out format has the winners of the duels advance to the final.

Final  Standing Rock & Roll

1. Jacek Eryk Tarczylo and Anna Miadzielec, POL

2. Ivan Youdin – Olga Sbitneva, RUS

3. René Bachmann – Stephanie Ruegg, SUI

The three Caribbean Dances are Salsa, Bachata and Merengue. Some of them were presented on the first two days of the games to the people in Kaohsiung through workshops held at the K-Arena. Now wonder that the audience cheered for all 23 couples representing as many countries when they put on the moves and created a typically Latin American atmosphere with their performances.

The winners were Jakub Mazuch and Michaela Gatekova, CZE, who had taken the silver medal in July when Salsa was contested at The World Games in Cali, COL.

Line Dance? Many had imagined something totally different under this genus name. Raunchy cowboys and girls stomping away to nothing but Country Western tunes is not what the audience got to see!  Line dancers enjoy dancing to the most varied types of music. Dancers from eight different countries participated.

Winners of the day were Shane McKeever, IRL in the men’s division and Slobhan Yasmin Dunn, GBR, in the women’s division.
