924 Breakers | 80 Countries 02 August 2017 10:17

B-Boy Sämyo: Ready For Paris 2024

We are getting very close to being able to announce the final numbers for the Breaking for Gold campaign through 31 July 2017, end of day UTC. The count stands currently at 924 videos submitted to the platform by b-boys/girls from 80 countries. And submissions are still getting processed, like the one of Raj Kumar Sain, aka  from Jaipur, IND. Unfortunately, his can no longer be considered. Just as quite a few others, which were submitted as #iambreakingforgold through Instagram or Facebook - but which were never formalised by uploading to the platform as per our instructions.

The jury will soon be in session, with the panel of expert judges about to determine the best five b-boys and b-girls, respectively, per country and to verify that those b-boys/girls representing countries from where fewer than five submissions per gender were received have the level required for Stage Two of Breaking for Gold!

Here is one of the videos submitted by a member of Ali Barkat's Street Dreamers Crew in Karachi, PAK: B-Boy Walochee

Remember, Ali's crew is the focus of a documentary on breaking in Pakistan. Director is Karim Baig. He has a crowdfunding campaign going on INDIEGOGO ... Chip in!

Breaking For Gold | First Evaluation 01 August 2017 15:15

Buenos Aires 2018 Bound

The dust has still not settled after the first stage of the "Breaking for Gold," the digital part of the qualifying for participation in the breaking events at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, has come to a conclusion. It was by the end of the day of 31 July 2017 - as per UTC or Greenwich Mean Time - that the videos had to be uploaded to www.breakingforgold.com.

But with the worldwide breaking community made up of "pro" procrastinators, all waiting for the very last moment to submit their videos and supporting documents, the strain put on the "Breaking for Gold" platform was such that things did turn progressively hectic as the deadline approached. BfG staff had to resort alternative ways of having the submissions delivered in time.

The final word is still out as to whether 900 or even 1,000 submissions by b-girls/boys from around the globe were surpassed - even as to the exact number of countries (standing at around 75 inofficially) we're not yet sure of, but one thing is certain already: "Breaking for Gold" starts off as an unqualified success ... Stay tuned for more!

Just one example! STREET DREAMERS is a documentary produced by director Karim Baig and Ali Barkat, the leader of the Street Dreamers Crew in Karachi, PAK. It will show the struggle of Pakistani breakers to make it to the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games.

Bring On The B-Girls 31 July 2017 05:52

B-Girl Narumi | BfG Judge

This pitch is made from Wroclaw, POL, with a short video that was recorded in Hong Kong: B-Girl Narumi talks about young breakers of both genders trying to qualify for the Youth Olympics next year.

B-Girl Narumi is a breaking legend and on the panel of judges for "Breaking for Gold," the qualifying process for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

With only a few hours left in the first stage of this process, it's the b-girls who perform below everyone's expectation and below the level of their participation in the dance. B-boys vs b-girls: 7:1 in the number of videos submitted to www.breakingforgold.com!

B-girls, you can still submit your video! But there are only a few hours left!

DanceSport Athletes Honoured 30 July 2017 22:38

Athletes of the Day © IWGA

Every day of The World Games 2017, the International World Games Association awards a TISSOT watch to the "Athlete of the Day." On the final day of the games, the jury of experts couldn't help but select four awardees: the legendary floorball player Mika Kohonen (FIN), Chen Siming (CHN), winner of the gold in Pool, and the DanceSport athletes Anna Miadzielec – Jacek Tarczylo (POL). IWGA Vice-President Max Bishop was to present them with their watches during the Closing Ceremony on the stage of The World Games Plaza.

Less than one hour before this presentation was about to happen, Anna and Jacek were declared "missing in action" by the people who were supposed to bring them to The World Games Plaza. The phones were running hot with calls between the WDSF Communications Team and Kresimir Bosnar, the General Secretary of the World Rock 'n' Roll Confederation, as well as Magda Czarnocka, the Deputy Competition Manager for DanceSport at TWG 2017, for one reason only. Anna and Jacek did not answer their phones. The trainers of the 2017 World Games Champions in Acrobatic Rock 'n' Roll, Bartłomiej Kobylański and Andrzej Łuczak, were contacted by phone too. Nobody knew where the couple was less than an hour prior to showtime ... But when the call was made for them to come to the stage, Anna and Jacek were there, happy to receive another award which singles them out as great dancers and athletes in a very challenging sport.

They were - according to the script of the Closing Ceremony - supposed to be involved in the handover of the International World Games Association's flag from the Mayor of Wroclaw to the Mayor of Birmingham. They were announced but never seen on stage. They were MIA once more. Anyway, congratulations Anna and Jacek: you really deserved to be the highlight of tonight!

And you were not the only ones hard to round up: pool player Chen Siming was never seen or heard of.

IOC Vice-President Erdener Meets B-Boys

B-Boy Flysi and four of his friends of the Battle Droids B-Boy Crew went Olympic ahead of time, on 29 July at The World Games 2017 Wroclaw, when they performed in front of two members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Prof Dr Ugur Erdener, IOC Vice-President and President of World Archery, and Jose Perurena, the President of the International World Games Association and the International Canoe Federation, were enthusiastic in their praise of the show put on by the Battle Droids. WDSF President Lukas Hinder invited the b-boys and participants in "Breaking for Gold" to meet and greet the IOC and IWGA brass at their table.

Will one of the five be breaking at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games? We will find out soon! The deadline for the submission of videos to www.breakingforgold.com is tomorrow, 31 July, at the end of the day UTC.

Born to win! Gabriele's life motto: "Nato per vincere!"

Where his fafourite football team Juventus had failed in the Champions League Final against Real Madrid earlier this year, Gabriele and Anna kept their cool and their focus on winning. That made them the second couple to repeat as World Games Champions In DanceSport. Auguri!

Another silver for Russia! Armen and Svetlana had hoped for more, trained harder than ever before, but a loss of balance by Armen in the Samba of the last round set them off on the wrong foot. But they took it like the champions they are.

It felt almost like in 2008, on the day when Charles-Guillaume Schmitt - Elena Salikhova won their first medal for France ... That was a gold at the Youth World Championships in Marseille, FRA. In Wroclaw it was a bronze - the same as in The World Games 2013 Cali - but it felt good!

Konstantin Chistikov - Ksenia Osnovina, RUS, were in Wroclaw because fellow Russians and higher-ranked Alexey KONDRASHIN - Darina KOZLOVA were unable to dance The World Games due to injury. Obviously they were aware of that and made the best of it, coming in runners-up, getting the third silver medal for the new Russian governing body: ALL RUSSIAN FEDERATION OF DANCE SPORT AND ACROBATIC ROCK'N'ROLL – FDSARR. A tongue breaker of a name that will hopefully get worked on further.

DanceSport Germany, the German DanceSport Federation (DTV), should be very happy over the bronze medal in Acrobatic Rock 'n' Roll. The amount of subsidies a national federation of a non-Olympic sport receives from the German Olympic Sports Confederation is highly dependent on the sport's performance in The World Games. One gold in Standard and one bronze in Rock 'n' Roll should put the DTV to where it belongs, into the group of well subsidiesed governing bodies of the non-Olympic kind!

But nobody is happier than Tobias Bludau - Michelle Uhl themselves. They're young, ambitious and determined to move up the echelons of the podium.

APOTHEOSIS 30 July 2017 00:05

Jacek Tarczylo - Anna Miadzielec, POL © Roland

If one had to look for another word to sum up the moment when the Acrobatic Rock 'n' Roll event staged as part of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, POL, came to an end, there is only one: APOTHEOSIS!

How else could one describe the outcome of great efforts put in by Jacek Tarczylo - Anna Miadzielec, POL, to make their country proud - and move up in the medal table ... Jacek and Anna made it look too easy. But everyone who knows sports is aware of the fact that going into a competition as the top contenders tends to make everything difficult. If this holds true for other sports, you can easily imagine that the risks of failure are multiplied in Acrobatic Rock 'n' Roll. Well done, Jacek and Anna! We are looking forward to see you defend this title in 2021 Birmingham, AL, USA.

First thing tomorrow (which means once we wake up), we will publish post-event interviews with all the medallists. Stay tuned!

EPIC 29 July 2017 23:40

Latin Podium of TWG 2017 Wroclaw © Roland

What a night it turned out to be ... And how better could one put into words the essence of two spectacular competitions in DanceSport that were held on 29 July at the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, POL, as part of The World Games 2017 than with this one attribute: EPIC!

Well, as in yesterday's Standard event, the World Games Champions in Latin of 2013 were able to defend their title of 2013 Cali, COL, four years later. Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus won the first medal for the Republic of Moldova. What you see in the official medal table of the International World Games Association does not reflect reality: MDA, the Republic of Moldova, should be tied with Serbia, Algeria and Peru in rank 36 of the overall medal table. Thanks to Gabi and Anna! But we are sure that our colleagues of IWGA Communications and Swiss Timing will amend the current medal table in no time at all: DanceSport never was an invitational sport on the programme of The World Games.

Latin 29 July 2017 17:14

Wroclaw, POL - 29 July © Roland

As we did in Salsa and Standard yesterday, we have reigning World Games Champions in Latin, too, who are seeking to revalidate their title won four years ago in Cali, COL. Gabriele Goffredo - Anna Matus celebrated one of their first BIG victories in The World Games 2013 and have been going strong ever since.

In 2015, they claimed their first World Champion title in Vienna, AUT, and defended it successfully in Chengdu, CHN. Only on relatively rare occasions, they had to give in to their strongest opponents, Armen Tsaturyan - Svetlana Gudyno, RUS. Over the past three years, they lost two European Championships to the Russians and were defeated by them in only one out of ten GrandSlam legs. It is a dominance that starts to resemble that of their immediate predecessors Nino Langella and Khrystyna Moshenska, ITA, who won three consecutive world titles and something like 15 GrandSlam legs altogether.

Armen and Svetlana are highly motivated to perform at their best here at The World Games. Just like Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova, who came in second in Standard yesterday, they are awed by The World Games and – as all members of the Russian delegation – keenly aware of their responsibility to bring back minimum a silver medal. If the Latin competition should end up like the European Championship in April, who knows, it could even be another gold added to the 26 Russia has as of this morning.

We have another couple that enjoys the strong support of its national federation and the National Olympic Committee at The World Games: Charles-Guillaume Schmitt - Elena Salikhova, FRA, have won the bronze medal in Cali. Consistent finalists in all major championships and in the GrandSlam Series for the past six years, they have always the aspiration to make it to the podium. Their last major title dates back to March 2016, when they won the European Universities Championships. That was before WDSF was granted recognition by the International University Sports Federation.

Who else is there to make it into the top six today? Andrea Silvestri - Varadi Martina, HUN, are the world #7 and have shown an ascending form for quite some time. Giacomo Lazzarini - Roberta Benedetti, ITA, are certainly contenders for the final, but then so are Moldovan Paul - Tatar Cristina, ROU (pictured on the left), and Guillem Pascual - Rosa Carne, ESP. Or Roman Gerbey - Oksana Lukyanenko, UKR, and Jenya Suvorov - Jenya Libman, ISR!

One thing is certain, the Norwegian couple made up of Petter Andreas Engan - Kine Marie Mardal won’t be among them. Kine had to inform the chairman this morning that she wouldn’t be able dance. She and Petter are here in Wroclaw, but a persisting injury keeps her off the floor
