No Ballroom | A University Gym! 09/10/2016

2016 American DanceSport Festival Heidi Goetz, the chair of the WDSF Communication Commision, reports from Boston, MA, about the return of top-level WDSF brand DanceSport to the USA.

WDSF competitions in USA? You have to go back quite a while, to the WDSF World DanceSport Championship Latin in New York which took place on 13 November 2010. Or one year prior to that, the WDSF GrandSlam Standard and Latin that was held  in Irvine on 4 and 5 September 2009.

After that it became rather quiet about WDSF DanceSport competitions in the United States.

It always has to have somebody to take the initiative, create ideas and also take the risks. Ronan Zinshtein, an active competitor himself up to last year and with a great heart for DanceSport, decided to bring forward the developement of the level of DanceSport in the United States. In his opinion results in the USA could be better. So 10 months ago he came up with the idea to cooperate and get in contact with European countries and provide a platform to dance in America. The plan is to organise the American DanceSport Festival every year, and maybe hosting a World Championship regularly. USA Dance gave green light for his initiative. Together with a team he started promoting his idea for the event. His message is:“I would love this competition to grow and make USA a better place for DanceSport.“ The venue is the University of Massachusetts, in Boston.

In 2016 the American DanceSport Festival sees a total entry level of around 400 couples. Among them many couples from Europe. They found it obviously interesting to know the United States as a competition place better. In the World Championship SEN I 66 couples were expected to dance for the title, 64 made it. In the World Championship SEN I Ten Dance 27 couples have entered.

Further categories to be seen during these two days are :

American Rhythm Championship – this is meant to be the American style of Latin Dancing. Smooth – the American style of Standard .

World Opens in Latin (on Saturday) and Standard.

The entries for Professional Division promise a semi-final and a final.
