With a Twist and a Twirl! 15/06/2011

Baton Twirling

On Sunday 19 June, the 2011 IDSF General Meeting will vote on approving the World Baton Twirling Federation (WBTF) as an Associate Member under the terms of the new Associate Membership Agreement.

While the other signatories (WRRC, UCWDC) to the new agreement have been part of the DanceSport family for quite some time, Baton twirling and its governing body WBTF could need a short introduction.

Baton twirling is an activity involving the manipulation of a metal rod with hands and body to a coordinated routine similar to those in rhythmic gymnastics, etc.

The distinguishing fundamental characteristics are:

  • Handling of the baton instrument to create visual images, pictures and patterns, executed with dexterity, smoothness, fluidity and speed, both close in and around the body, and by releasing the baton into the air.
  • Expression of the body through dance and movement to create a demonstration of strength, flexibility, physical fitness, beauty, aesthetics, and harmony in coordination with the manipulation of the baton.
  • The incorporation of gymnastic movements adapted to baton twirling to create additional elements of risk and excitement.

The increasing popularity of the sport of baton twirling throughout the world brought about the formation of the WBTF in 1977. The WBTF mission is to develop, promote and standardise the sport. In October of 1979, the WBTF delegates met in Paris, France to finalise all plans for the first World Baton Twirling Championships. bringing together teams of twirlers from ten countries to compete in a spirit of healthy, athletic competition.
