World Championships Senior 29/04/2013

2013 World Senior II Standard

The World Championship Standard for Senior II returned to Calvia, Mallorca, after 2011. This time, the local organisers of the 4th Mallorca DanceSport Challenge, Gabriel Riera and Francisca Barcelo, could welcome 142 couples.

One development in the Senior categories is definitely towards higher levels in Standard as well as in Latin. While a few years ago Senior DanceSport was popular only in a small number of countries, couples representing 28 nations and all continents took the opportunity to compete in their World Championship here in Calvia. The largest numbers of entries were definitely from Italy and Germany. Qualified for the final were couples from Germany, Italy and Estonia.

The winners Heinz-Josef and Aurelia Bickers certainly came with good memories of the venue, the "Pavello Galatzo." In 2011 they won their first World title here, followed by a second in Cambrils, ESP, in 2012. They celebrated their third World Championship win with a very nice Viennese Waltz as their honour dance.

When the project of "Open World Championships“ was started a few years ago, the acceptance of the couples was enormous. We could see entries between 200 and 300 couples. This time, only 142! What ist he reason for this developement? It would be interesting to hear the opinions of the couples.
