As Kaunas prepares to host the 60th edition of the International Standard Dance Competition “Amber Couple, the event reaches a milestone that goes far beyond sport. Taking place on 2–3 May 2026 at the iconic Žalgiris Arena, this anniversary edition reflects six decades of continuous development, cultural exchange, and sporting excellence within Lithuania and the wider international DanceSport community.

Organised by Kaunas City Municipality, the Lithuanian DanceSport Federation and World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), Kaunas Cultural Centre, and the dance club “Sūkurys”, and supported by media partner LRT, the event has become one of the most enduring and recognisable Standard dance competitions in Europe.

Beyond its sporting significance, “Amber Couple” represents a living tradition that has evolved alongside Lithuania’s own cultural and historical transformation. A Tradition Shaping DanceSport: Lina Chatkevičiūtė-Vėželienė on the 60th “Amber Couple” Anniversary in Kaunas

A legacy rooted in vision and continuity

The 2026 edition marks the 60th anniversary of “Amber Couple”. What does reaching this milestone mean for you and the organising team?

Standard dances was a novelty that began to be promoted in Soviet Lithuania. Serious competitions only started after the war. At that time, it was a new phenomenon in Lithuania, reflecting cultural progress, and organizing events of such a scale required considerable courage. The contribution of Česlovas Norvaiša was also significant - thanks to him, participants began to be invited from Poland, Białystok, and later from other foreign countries as well.

Amber Couple Anniversary

The fact that “Amber Couple” has been held for the sixtieth consecutive time is an achievement not only of the organizers but of the entire Lithuanian DanceSport community. It is a joint effort and contribution of the federation, the organizers, the Kaunas city municipality, the Kaunas Culture Centre and colleagues from other countries - dancers, coaches, and judges - toward the continuity of this competition. This event is perceived not only as a sporting competition but also as a significant cultural phenomenon in Lithuania and the Baltic states, where sport merges with culture.

Competitors strive to win, yet it is not forgotten that Standard dances are an aesthetic and expressive sport. The event always pays attention to show elements as well - “Amber Couple” brings together music and dance performances of various genres, which keeps it engaging, constantly renewing itself, and attractive to participants and audience.

How would you describe the evolution of “Amber Couple” over the years, from its beginnings to becoming an international reference event?

The idea of the “Amber Couple” competition was conceived by Jūratė Norvaišienė and Česlovas Norvaiša. It progressed quite rapidly thanks to their organizational and democratic abilities: within a few years, the competition - which had previously not admitted participants either from abroad or even from other Lithuanian cities - became an event attracting couples and judges from Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. The first competitions already showed the potential to become international, but the prevailing Soviet period at the time limited these opportunities. It took many years of consistent work, but the event eventually became an international competition - professional standards rose, its geography expanded, and international connections strengthened.

Over time, however, the number of participating countries grew, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the competition became widely known not only in the region but throughout the world. Throughout its history, it has featured many of the brightest stars of the DanceSport world - both as competitors and as performers in showcase programs. This helped the event gain prestige and international recognition.

Today, the “Amber Couple” is a high-level international competition featuring some of the strongest couples from various continents - Europe, Asia, and other regions. Competitors perform at the highest professional level, continuing a long-standing tradition and promoting the culture of ballroom dancing worldwide.

What makes Kaunas and the Žalgiris Arena a special setting for this anniversary edition?

In Lithuania, Kaunas is rightfully regarded as the capital of DanceSport. Historically, it was in this city that a strong tradition of Standard dancing was formed - many world-class dancers have grown up here, and some of the strongest dance clubs in the country continue to operate here to this day. For this reason, it is only natural that one of the most important competitions, the “Amber Couple,” takes place in Kaunas. The city not only has deep-rooted dance traditions but also strong community support - the event consistently receives attention and patronage from the city municipality, and residents actively attend and take pride in this long-standing tradition.

Of course, it is especially gratifying to recall that from small competitions once held in the Grand Hall of the Kaunas Cultural Centre or in the Kaunas Sports Hall, the event has grown into one that is now held at Kaunas Žalgiris Arena and accommodates more than 10,000 people. In one of the most modern arenas in Lithuania, which ensures top-level conditions for both dancers and spectators, the space, technical capabilities, and impressive atmosphere allow the event to become a true spectacle.

As one of the longest-running Standard and Latin dance competitions in Lithuania, what do you think has been key to its long-term continuity and success?

At the beginning, there were two people - Jūratė and Česlovas Norvaiša - who worked day after day without thinking about financial well-being. Over the years, a strong team joined them, spreading the word about the “Amber Couple.” All of them were united by a love for their work, for dance, and by a dedication to which they were, and still are, fully committed.

The “Amber Couple” has always stood out for its inclusiveness - traditionally, the competition features dancers of various ages and skill levels: from children and youth to adults and top-level professionals. Such a structure allows the event to be not only a competition but also a celebration of the entire ballroom dancing community.

The event is further distinguished by the fact that it has hosted as many as two Professional World Championships - Standard dances and Standard Show Dance. This testifies to the highest level of organization and international recognition.

How do you approach bringing together international couples, judges, and audiences for this event each year?

After the “Amber Couple” competition ends, the organizers immediately begin preparing for the following year - looking for new ways to surprise both participants and spectators. Consistent planning allows the event to maintain a high standard and international appeal every year. An important part of the program is the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) ranking competitions. These provide an opportunity for top athletes to earn world ranking points, while young dancers gain valuable international experience. In this way, a balance is ensured between the highest level of mastery and emerging talent.

Another important tradition is inviting the best Standard dance couples in the world to perform showcase programs. Such performances become the true highlight of the event and allow spectators to witness the highest level of artistic and athletic expression. Due to the high organizational standards, strong reputation, and excellent conditions provided for participants, internationally recognized judges from around the world are also eager to attend, ensuring professional and objective evaluation.

The competition is particularly popular among couples from Asian countries - the geography of participants expands every year. This year, dancers from China, Japan, and the Philippines are expected to attend. This once again confirms how important the event has become.

The competition is often described as a meeting point of different generations of dancers. How important is this intergenerational aspect for the event’s identity?

The “Amber Couple” has always been not only a sporting competition but also a celebration that brings the DanceSport community together. It has provided an opportunity to introduce guests and participants to Kaunas’s museums and Old Town, to take them on boat trips across the Kaunas Lagoon, and to present Lithuania to the global community. Many foreign guests were surprised to discover that there is a unique language here, a rich culture, beautiful nature, and hospitable, sincere people.

Today, it is a great place for different generations to learn from one another - young dancers gain experience from the older ones, while the older are inspired by the energy and new ideas of the younger generation. As in many events of this kind, dancers of various ages take part in the competition - from school-age children to adults of all ages.

For young dancers in particular, this competition is extremely important - they have the opportunity to observe the best Standard couples in the world live and to learn from their technique, artistry, and stage presence. Such experience often becomes a strong source of inspiration to strive for higher achievements.

What role does “Amber Couple” play in the development and visibility of Standard and Latin dance in Lithuania today?

We have many world champions - “Sūkurys” club alone has produced many world champions. Lithuania and the “Amber Couple” are well known to a large part of the global DanceSport community - we are visible and respected on an international scale.

Moreover, the event makes a significant contribution to the popularization of ballroom dancing in Lithuania. It attracts not only the dance community but also the general public - spectators have the opportunity to see the beauty, elegance, and professionalism of this sport up close. It is especially important that young people who attend the event become interested in dancing and often choose this path themselves.

Standard dancing is one of the most popular sports in Lithuania, and long-standing, high-level competitions such as the “Amber Couple” undoubtedly contribute to the growth of this popularity, the continuity of traditions, and the development of new talent.

The final evening includes a special concert dedicated to Mother’s Day. What is the idea behind combining dance and this cultural celebration?

The long-standing tradition of the “Amber Couple” to hold the competition on the first weekend of May naturally coincides with Mother’s Day in Lithuania. As a result, Sunday evening takes on a special meaning - it is dedicated to mothers and the whole family. On this day, spectators are invited to the Žalgiris Arena, where the ceremonial final concert and competitions take place.

This is not only the final of the Standard dancing competition but also an impressive cultural event that attracts thousands of spectators every year. The concert is filmed and broadcast live on Lithuanian National Television, allowing viewers across Lithuania to watch it. During the event, the audience sees the strongest finalist couples of the competition, spectacular show programs, and performances by some of Lithuania’s most popular artists.

How would you describe the atmosphere that visitors can expect during this anniversary edition at Žalgiris Arena?

We expect the atmosphere to be exceptional, as this is an anniversary edition of the competition; therefore, it will undoubtedly take place at a very high artistic and sporting level.

This year, the event will be further enriched by a live orchestra performing during the final performances, adding a special atmosphere to the evening, and well-known Lithuanian singers will also appear. It is also important that the evening concert is free of charge, making it accessible to everyone. As a result, crowds of spectators gather at the Žalgiris Arena every year - it is expected that this year their number may exceed 10,000.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of “Amber Couple” in its next chapter after this 60th edition?

The future of the “Amber Couple” is associated with the consistent continuation of traditions and growth in the international arena. It is expected that the competition will maintain its unique identity - combining high-level sporting competition with a strong cultural program that has already become an integral part of the event. An important goal is to further strengthen cooperation with the World DanceSport Federation by incorporating more title events and championships into the program. This would allow the event to further establish itself among the most important ballroom dancing events in the world.

It is also expected that more and more top-level couples will choose this competition as an important part of their season, that the event will become even more attractive to young dancers by providing them with motivation to improve, and that the culture of ballroom dancing will continue to be nurtured not only in Lithuania but throughout the Baltic states.

The “Amber Couple” has the potential to take an even more significant place in the international calendar, becoming not only a sports competition but also a prestigious cultural event that brings together different generations, countries, and dance traditions.

We therefore hope that the “Amber Couple” will continue for many years to come and will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
