Fewer Russians

2013 GOC

Some had expected it to happen last year already: a ruble that is constantly weakening in the exchange to other currencies makes it difficult for Russian dancers to travel abroad and to compete in events such as the German Open Championships (GOC). It didn’t happen then, but this year’s GOC will – according to the organisers – register 125 Russian couples, or about one third of the usual Russian contingent, less than the one in 2014. This translates to as many as 350 fewer entries in the altogether 41 competitions held during the GOC. Whoever figured that DanceSport would not be subject to geopolitical and financial influences: think again!

On a brighter side, the organisers noted that entries in the two GrandSlams are again decidedly higher than those of the other legs in the Series. Between 300 and 350 couples will dance in each of the two. All in all, 4,500 couples are expected to compete in Stuttgart this year. Between them, they will represent 57 nations. One may look to some of the other events claiming to be “the world’s biggest in dance” – regardless whether their held in drab seaside resorts or in wintery amusement parks – there is none that comes even close to matching these figures!
