From Beneath The Chandelier | Day Two

Dmitry Timokhin, RUS

Here is the second instalment of the "Beneath the Chandelier" series of Heidi Goetz's reports on the Judging and Assessment course in Stuttgart, GER. The course concluded yesterday. A regular Adjudicators' Congress is scheduled for today.

The first lecturer in the morning was Dmitry Timokhin, RUS. His subject was PAS/IQs of Technical Quality in the Latin Dances. Assisted by young Russian dancers, he demonstrated correct footwork and foot placing, leg and hip actions in the various dances.

This demonstration was followed by another very structured, informative and entertaining lecture done by Jens Werner, DEN, assisted by the PD couple Benedetto Ferruggia and Claudia Koehler. His topic was Choreography and Presentation. The first and main question was, "What do we expect from a good and interesting choreography?" regarding

  • Content
  • Timing
  • Space
  • Degree of difficulty

Regarding "Presentation,"  "Non-Verbal Communication" between two partners was demonstrated in a very impressive way. Presentation which we can see very often nowadays looks rather ridiculous. It was great to see the gradual improvement of Presentation as soon as the couple shows real true feelings and natural expression.

Martina Wessel-Therhorn did the lecture next. In her trademark clear and structured way she spoke about Partnering Skill in the Standard dances. Benedetto Ferruggia and Claudia Koehler were with her to demonstrate.

She concentrated on Body Position and through this on Physical Communication with the partner. She pointed out very clearly what is necessary to get higher scores. She also informed about Hold, Sways, Overbalance, Counterbalance Holds, Drops to be seen on different levels, Time and Space and last but not least about Consistency.

Last lecturer of the day was Ruud Vermeij, NED, one of the most charismatic lecturers.

"Choreography and Presentation" was the topic that he was assigned and he put his emphasis on the presentation by lectureing about

1. Non Verbal Communication - NVC which functions through signals:

  • Focus
  • Gestures
  • Body orientation
  • Facial expressions
  • Touch
  • Proximity (distance between people)
  • Sound

2. Energy

3. Moods, Atmosphere

To conclude his lecture he reminded the adjudicators to:

Stay with yourself while assessing!

Enjoy judging with ethic responsibility!
