2015 Adjudicators' Congress Stuttgart

Heidi Goetz, the chair of the WDSF Communication Commission, reports on the Judgment and Assessment Course that is currently in progress in Stuttgart, GER. This is the first instalment covering day one.

This Assessment Course is held for the first time ever. Adjudicators who are interested in judging competitions where the WDSF Judging System 2.1 is used, or who simply want to learn about the background of the system, were enrolled by their National Member Bodies to attend the two-day course.

The focus is on:

  • Evolution of WDSF Judging System
  • Principles of Absolute Judgement
  • Definition and usage of Performence Assessment Standard (PAS)
  • Definition and usage of Indicative Qualities (IQs)
  • Practical Assessment

The WDSF General Secretary and chair of the DanceSport Academy, Shawn Tay, could welcome 153 attendants. In his lecture he gave an overview and talked about the evolution of the WDSF Judging System as well as absolute judgement in general. In his introduction he pointed out WDSF's priorities and goals to serve and protect our athletes, to guarantee good competitions, and the importance of an objective approach to judging in this context.

He then welcomed Marina Ferrari and Fabio Bosco who lectured on PAS/IQs of Technical Quality in the Standard dances. They concentrated on the Technical Quality's sub-components and covered them in detail. They also lectured on the principles of Basic Movement and provided criteria for marking them 6, 8 or 10.

The next lecturer was Michele Bonsignori, who was assissted by Monica Baldasseroni. His subject were the PAS/IQs in Movement to Music. The key points in his lecture were

  • Rhythm
  • Musical Structure
  • Timing/Shuffle Timing

Besides explaining, Michele demonstrated very clearly and impressively together with Monica.

Sergej Milicija talked about the PAS/IQs of the Partnering Skill. He was assisted by Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus. The key points in his lecture concerning covered Use of Space, Synchronisation and Consistency.

The last lecture of day one was presented by Holger Nitsche and Jürgen Neudeck, both of them specialists in rhythm. So their lecture was, of course, on the PAS/IQS of Movement to Music in the Latin dances. As demonstrators, they had invited Martino Zanibellato and Michelle Abiltrup as well as Nina Bezzubova and Timur Imametdinov. The adjudicators could see high quality dancing and rhythmical interpretation and acquire an apreciation for both.
